Daily Digest 9/5 - Gold Flashing Major Buy Signal, Singaporeans Still Love Cash

Trump Moves to End DACA and Calls on Congress to Act (jdargis)

The policy change would affect about 800,000 undocumented immigrants, but the president signaled he will delay ending the program so Congress can replace it.

The plan to tie the debt ceiling to Harvey funding (jdargis)

Hurricane Harvey has opened a path to get one of the most controversial items off Republican leaders's backs. Conservative members won't vote to raise the debt ceiling without significant spending cuts, and Mark Meadows, chairman of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus, has already said he thinks it's wrong to use hurricane funding to dodge this thorny issue.

Gold to S&P 500 Ratio Flashing Major Buy Signal (GE Christenson)

Expect the S&P to correct or crash, and then rise again. The ride may be rough. The correction might be extreme. Stormy weather ahead!

Gold will rise as further dollar devaluation and increasing demand are all but guaranteed.

Singaporeans, in Age of E-Payments, Still Love Cash (tmn)

In Singapore, creating a cashfree society has been slow going. In a city where almost everyone has a smartphone, nine out of 10 people still prefer to pay for everyday transactions the old-fashioned way – with cash.

Navajo solar plant breaks new ground (jdargis)

The town of Kayenta benefited, too. The contractor hired and trained about 200 Navajos to build the plant, said Deenise Becenti, a spokeswoman for the tribal utility, leaving a qualified workforce for other projects.

The tribal utility avoided passing on the $60 million cost of the solar plant to its customers through federal solar investor tax credits, said Glenn Steiger, project manager for the solar farm. A two-year power purchase and renewable energy credit agreement with the Salt River Project will cover loan repayments for the plant’s construction, Steiger said.

Is Big Oil Prepared For The Natural Gas Era?

Oil’s biggest enemy is the electric vehicle. Increased adoption of electric cars will be the driver of oil’s demise after 2028. By 2022, DNV estimates, EVs will “achieve cost parity” with internal combustion engines as their cost performance will improve at a much faster pace than the cost performance of ICE vehicles. By 2033, 50 percent of new car sales globally will be EVs.

The food revolution’s missing piece (jdargis)

This new food awareness has taken many forms: the Slow Food movement, the eat-local movement, the organic movement, the Fair Trade movement, and the food-justice movement, to name just a few. It also has brought insider terms like “high fructose corn syrup,” “lean, finely textured beef,” and “genetically modified organism” not only into the common lexicon but into the center of public debates about how our food is raised, how government supports and regulates its production, and how agri-culture was transformed into agri-business while most of the country wasn’t watching. This sudden sea change in consumer habits put the forces of Big Food on alert that Americans were looking for something more wholesome, more sustainable, and more environmentally and socially responsible—something, ultimately, that they could put on the dinner table without feeling guilty that they were destroying the planet and shredding the fabric of farming communities.

Harvey: Too poor to flee the hurricane (Jen H.)

Judie, meanwhile, is worried about two other neighbours. Both got out before the storm struck and have not yet returned to learn that their homes are destroyed.

She is particularly concerned about the elderly woman who lives two trailers along. "She has no money and that was her home and it was already crap so..." Judie tails off as if she can think of no useful way to complete the thought, no hope to offer.

When to hold-up, when to fold-up, when to run

Irma has been upgraded from a Cat 5+ Hurricane to "Potentially Catastrophic" Cat 5++ storm, with winds now near 180 mph gusting to 220 mph...

The Irma hits just keep on coming, with the NHC Atlantic Ops twitter page reporting moments ago that as of this moment, Irma is now the strongest hurricane in the Atlantic basin outside of the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico in NHC records.

Might be a really good time to board up the house and visit the relatives in Minnesota

Virgin Islands Allows National Guard To Seize Guns, Ammo Ahead Of Hurricane Irma (The DC)

U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp signed an emergency order allowing the seizure of private guns, ammunition, explosives and property the National Guard may need to respond to Hurricane Irma. Mapp signed the order Monday in preparation for Hurricane Irma.

The order allows the Adjutant General of the Virgin Islands to seize private property they believe necessary to protect the islands, subject to approval by the territory’s Justice Department.

Mapp issued an emergency declaration Tuesday and mobilized National Guard units to prepare for the massive storm.

Hope for the best

The tiny tornado that ripped through the city where I live two weeks ago is less than nothing compared to these giants.

We hope that this monster will either deflate or avoid lands.

All our thoughts go to the affected people.
