Friday, May 5, 2017, 1:52 PM

This is Good News Friday, where we find some good economic, energy, and environmental news and share it with PP readers. Please send any positive news to [email protected] with subject header "Good News Friday." We will save and post weekly. Enjoy!

Economy

Unemployment rate drops to lowest level in a decade in April as economy adds 211,000 jobs (jdargis)

In addition to the drop in the headline unemployment rate, which measures people who are actively looking for work but unable to find it, broader measures of unemployment and underemployment continue to improve. The U-6 rate — a broader measure of underemployment that includes those who have given up looking for work and who are employed part time but would like to be full time — fell to 8.6 percent in the month, the lowest level seen since 2007.

To Everyone Who Feels Behind: Your Work Matters (jdargis)

It’s not about trusting the universe or God. It’s about trusting yourself. Because life doesn’t have to make sense. It just has to matter. And if you act like your life matters, it does.

Shape-changing fog screen invented (jdargis)

"With other 3D display technologies your eyes need to focus on the display surface, even if you see an object "popping out" of the screen. If you then try to touch it, your eyes will need to focus either on your hand or on the display, which soon can lead to eye fatigue (unless the 3D object and your hand are really close to the display surface). MistForm can adapt to these scenarios, moving the display surface so that both the object and the hand remain comfortably visible. With this kind of technique, we can provide comfortable direct hand 3D interaction in all the range your arms can reach."

Men Slowly Return to the Labor Force (jdargis)

The comeback, which began in 2014, is so far pretty tentative. The percentage of prime-age civilian men who either have a job or are actively looking for one (that's the labor force participation rate), actually went down a tick from 88.7 percent March to 88.6 percent in April, according to today's employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Its post-recession peak was 88.9 percent, reached in January and in March 2016. But these numbers, derived from a monthly survey of 60,000 households conducted by the Census Bureau, tend to jump around a bit from month to month, which is why I used three-month rolling averages in the above chart.

Tutu Protests And Parties Break Out In Wyoming Over Senator's Remark (sv)

A week after Sen. Mike Enzi told high school students that a man who wears a tutu to a bar "kind of asks for" a fight, his constituents in Wyoming are wearing tutus to school and work — and, yes, to bars — on Friday. Enzi has apologized for his "poor choice of words."

Treasury denies Exxon waiver from Russian sanctions (sv)

Pursuing the waiver would have been politically sensitive and possibly have had more potential cons for Exxon and the Trump administration than pros, said Jim Krane, fellow in energy geopolitics at Rice University's Baker Institute.

Thermo-chemical energy: Uni Newcastle unveils challenge to solar + storage (Grace)

Using a University of Newcastle patented process called CLAS (Chemical Looping Air Separation), air is passed through the particle mixture to generate heat, which then spins a turbine, which in turn generates power.

The kicker, says Infratech CEO Rajesh Nellore, is that as well as generating power the system can generate potential revenue streams for users by creating hydrogen and oxygen as saleable byproducts.
