China Is Playing a $9 Trillion Game of Chicken With Savers (jdargis)

“Cracking down on implicit guarantees is just like curbing home prices,” she says. “It’s something that the government needs to say, but it’s not something they will eventually do.”

Yang’s steadfast faith in bailouts illustrates the dilemma for authorities as they try to reduce moral hazard and improve the pricing of risk in China’s financial system: It may require a major WMP blowup to shake investors out of their complacency, an event that could wreak havoc on banks that increasingly rely on the products for funding.

How China Is Keeping Its Financial System From Collapsing, In One Chart (jdargis)

That said, the stresses facing China's "risk free" shadow banks are nothing new - we first profiled their plight back in 2014 - and over the past few years, the PBOC has been actively involved in providing the much needed liquidity support to not only China's "shadow" financing vehicles, but its entire financial system.

Donald J. Trump: The Empire's Spanker-In-Chief (Aaron M.)

The Donald's missile "attack" on Syria's al-Shairat air base is surely the most impetuous, thoughtless, reckless and stupid act from the Oval Office that we can remember---and that covers 50 years at least. And we put "attack" in quotes because it's now evident that virtually every one of those $1.4 million per copy Tomahawks amounted to a big fat nothing-burger.

Nasty, brutish, and short—what the next Korean War will look like (jdargis)

The world is, of course, accustomed to attention-seeking military stunts from North Korea. It’s just that they’re getting harder to dismiss. The rogue nation established its nuclear prowess years ago, and its missile technology appears to be advancing at an alarming rate. Some analysts believe it could have the ability to hit US metros with nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) within a few years.

Gold Gains With Treasuries and Yen on Haven Demand: Markets Wrap (jdargis)

Haven assets advanced for a second day as U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said during a Group of Seven meeting in Italy that Russia must abandon its support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Tensions also remain high in Asia after President Donald Trump said on Twitter that “North Korea is looking for trouble,” and that the U.S. would “solve the problem” with or without China.

Gold Selling for $10,000? Yes! (GE Christenson)

If you own gold or plan to buy gold, this information affects you. Other ideal times to buy gold were after the 9-11 disaster, during the stock market crash in October and November 2008, the December 2015 multi-year low in gold prices, and early 2017.

Can ‘Fire Ice’ Solve Japan’s Energy Problem?

In February, a ministry official told Platts that the test would begin sometime around late April, with the goal to have the tests run non-stop for up to one month. The trial will test the decreasing pressure system at the Daini-Atsumi Knoll in the eastern Nankai Trough, and would aim to evaluate the feasibility of stably producing gas from methane hydrate with the decreasing pressure system for a certain period. The ultimate goal is to ascertain whether the output could go commercial-scale in the future, according to the trade ministry’s official.

Whale cams reveal secret Antarctic feeding habits (jdargis)

It also added to their understanding of how any change in krill population due to climate change, commercial fishing, or ocean acidification, may impact whales in the future.

"We have some wonderful data on different feeding strategies from rolling lunges near the surface, to bubble net feeding, to deep foraging dives lunging through dense patches of krill," said Friedlaender.

Re:Donald J. Trump: The Empire's Spanker-In-Chief

The way Trump is marching the USA into war with Syria, Russia and North Korea, Trump might be able to add Starting WW3 in his first 100 days accomplishments.

I know a lot of Trump supporters supported him because they believed he would dial back the wars in the Middle East and improve relations with Russia. It appears Trump has done a full 180 turn, and joining the establishment. You know it can't be good when both CNN & Fox news both support Trump on his war agenda.

My understanding is that the push to remove Assad is that that want a quick fix to the refugee crisis. Trump had been debriefed that Assad did not use Chemical weapons, but it opened the door removing Assad. That said, I firmly beleive that removing assad is going to increase the refugee problem. The refugee issue isn't just limited to Syria, but also from the other nations that the US destabilized, such as Libya. If the US wasn't able to stablized Libya there is no way they are going to stablize Syria.

On the Pacific Theater, Trump is going to war with North Korea. The NK gov't is going to retailate FULL MAX, and throw everything that have at SK, Japan and US forces the instant they see that hostility are imminent. They have nothing to lose, because once the US attacks the NK gov't is dead. If the US gives then a deadline, like the did with Saddam in Iraq, I am sure NK will go nuclear before the deadline is breached. It will be a total war and I am sure Nuke will be used probably by both sides. China has massed at least 150K troops on the NK border. I am uncertain if China intends to support the US or if they are positioning to defend NK.

...except that, assad was never the cause of the refugee crisis.

syria was doing just fine until the CIA decided to create ISIS, with help from their friends in israel and saudi arabia.

and until the usa decided to start giving financing and arms to "moderate" al-qaeda rebels in syria to start a civil war. you know, al qaeda, the ones that allegedly are responsible for 9/11? why is america funding terrorism again? isn't that supposed to be a crime? oh, that's right, obama decided he would just wave his hand and make that law go away:

Pentagon awards contract to United Airlines to remove Assad

Pentagon awards contract to United Airlines to forcibly remove Assad (DB)

Quote:

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon announced Tuesday it had awarded a sole-source contract to United Airlines for work related to the forcible removal of President Bashar al-Assad from Syria. The contract, worth $2.1 billion, tasks the airline company with locating Assad, grabbing him from his seat in the presidential palace, and “dragging him out of Damascus by his arms.” The contract also notes that Assad should be “asked several times, politely” to give up his seat of power, though if he refuses, United workers should bloody his nose up a bit...
