A Dire Warning – ‘Someone Is Learning How to Take Down the Internet’ (pinecarr)

Recently, some of the major companies that provide the basic infrastructure that makes the Internet work have seen an increase in DDoS attacks against them. Moreover, they have seen a certain profile of attacks. These attacks are significantly larger than the ones they’re used to seeing. They last longer. They’re more sophisticated. And they look like probing. One week, the attack would start at a particular level of attack and slowly ramp up before stopping. The next week, it would start at that higher point and continue. And so on, along those lines, as if the attacker were looking for the exact point of failure.

Grand Ascension or Great Collapse? (Taki T.)

Gold hit lows approximately every 89 months. The rally from the December 2015 low has been impressive. Given the likelihood of corrections and/or crashes in stocks, bonds, and the dollar, gold prices should rally further.

Stock & Bond Bubbles Much Worse Than 1929: David Stockman (pinecarr)

All this financial malfeasance and engineering was fantastic for the one percent, but everybody else got the shaft. For example, Stockman points out in “Trumped!” the last 30 years “The top 1%’s wealth has grown by 300%, and the top “Forbes 400” wealthiest people in the world had their wealth grow by a staggering 1,000%.” Meanwhile, the “bottom 90% of Americans have seen their wealth steadily deteriorate.” Stockman goes on to say, “This has benefited a very narrow slice of the population. You can call it the 1% or the bicoastal elites who own most of the financial assets.”

Asset Protection: Surviving the Worst-Case Scenario (Tiffany D.)

Today marks the first day of the Total Wealth Symposium in Bermuda. Speakers and attendees have been arriving in a steady stream since yesterday, and there’s excitement in the air. Even in Bermuda, hundreds of miles from the American coast where you encounter travelers from all over the globe, all eyes are turned anxiously toward America. There’s a sense that the world is standing on the edge of a precipice.

Right-to-Repair Activists are Heroes (reflector)

The price gouging these methods enable is disgraceful. An “authorized” iPhone battery replacement costs $79, compared to the $30 Matchar paid for an unauthorized replacement at a Hong Kong electronics mall, and the $35 iFixit (about which more below) charges for a mail-order replacement kit. Several years ago Julian Sanchez managed to defeat the purposefully impossible to open casing on his iPhone and unjam a button, rather than take the Genius Bar’s advice and replace it for $250 (“Dammit, Apple,” June 2, 2008). Closer to home, my sister recently paid $200 just to have a technician run diagnostic software on her car.

Top German companies say refugees not ready for job market (Arthur Robey)

A survey by Reuters of the 30 companies in Germany's DAX stock market index found they could point to just 63 refugee hires in total. Several of the 26 firms who responded said they considered it discriminatory to ask about applicants' migration history, so they did not know whether they employed refugees or how many.

Of the 63 hires, 50 are employed by Deutsche Post DHL, which said it applied a "pragmatic approach" and deployed the refugees to sort and deliver letters and parcels.

A Sour Surprise for Public Pensions: Two Sets of Books (jdargis)

The two competing ways of valuing a pension fund are often called the actuarial approach (which is geared toward helping employers plan stable annual budgets, as opposed to measuring assets and liabilities), and the market approach, which reflects more hard-nosed math.

The market value of a pension reflects the full cost today of providing a steady, guaranteed income for life — and it’s large. Alarmingly large, in fact. This is one reason most states and cities don’t let the market numbers see the light of day.

Colonial Pipeline Response: News Updates (Tycer L.)

This afternoon, working in consultation with Unified Command, Colonial Pipeline will begin excavation operations to repair the impacted section of pipe on Line 1. This work will continue throughout the weekend, with Line 1 projected to restart next week. Recovery of gasoline, which remains contained, also continues as safety conditions allow.

Big Oil Flocks To Argentina As Permian Land Prices Skyrocket (Josh O.)

In an interview with Bloomberg TV from Buenos Aires, Dudley said BP is planning on acquiring more assets in the Vaca Muerta. And it isn’t just the “enormous potential” from the oil and gas reserves in the shale basin, but also the friendly policy put forth by the new Argentine government led by President Mauricio Macri. “I’m really encouraged by what I see,” Dudley said. “There’s a lot of future here.” BP has a joint venture with Bridas Corp. – BP owns 60 percent of Pan American Energy LLC and Bridas controls the other 40 percent. BP will expand its presence in Argentina through this JV.

In Miami, a Woman Is Fighting to Keep Her Treehouse a Home (jdargis)

Ms. Chasser, a self-described “barefoot hippie” who has been living outside for over two decades, will not go quietly. In fact, she said in an interview on Thursday, she’s planning not to go at all, “whether I’m going to chain myself to the treehouse or do it like they want me to do it.” Fixing things the county’s way would entail obtaining the correct permits for the property’s structures and bringing the plumbing and electrical wiring up to code.

12:15 am: Russia's foreign ministry says it has "reached the terrifying conclusion" that the US is conniving with the Islamic State. As ABC reports, Russia has called for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council over a U.S. air raid that it says struck Syrian troops battling the Islamic State group. Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova says Moscow is demanding "full and detailed explanations about whether this was deliberate support of the Islamic State or another mistake."

ABC wrote:

Zakharova was quoted by the state news agency Tass as saying that "after today's attack on the Syrian army, we come to the terrible conclusion that the White House is defending the Islamic State."

The U.S. military says it halted an air raid against IS in eastern Syria after it was informed by Russia that it might have struck Syrian troops. If confirmed, it would be the first American strike on President Bashar Assad's forces in the five-year-old conflict. The allegations come as Moscow and Washington are already at loggerheads over a five-day-old Syrian cease-fire, with each accusing the other of failing to fully implement it.

It appears this major diplomatic scandal is only starting to play out.

And the hits just keep on coming

http://6abc.com/news/shots-fired-at-police-in-south-philadelphia/1516281/

Two men were arrested after firing shots at Philadelphia police officers early Sunday morning.

It happened just after midnight on South Street in South Philadelphia.

Police say two officers noticed two men smoking marijuana at 9th and South.

When the officers approached, police say the men ran to nearby Darien Street.

According to authorities, that's when one of the men shot at the officers.

They were not hit.

The men were arrested and the gun was recovered.

Police did not fire a shot during the incident.

I'm still looking forward to the Eagles game Monday night.  They're going to strike a blow for justice.  Yay!

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/eagles/Pederson-ssays-doesnt-think-Monday-night-protest-will-distract.html

Eagles coach Doug Pederson didn’t sound thrilled that at least some of his players plan a protest during Monday night’s national anthem, but he didn’t sound terribly offended, either. And he indicated that if the entire team stood together, he would join in.

Pederson, an opponent of such gestures when the controversy began with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick last month, seems at the very least resigned to their spread across the NFL, and also respectful of the feelings of players who say they want to send a message about inequality and racism.
