NYC jail admissions down almost 50% since 2014 in major achievement for criminal justice reform (Jen H.)

New Yorkers landed in jail in fiscal year 2019, from July 1, 2018, through June 30, 2019, fewer than 40,000 times, according to the statistics compiled by the Mayor’s Office for Criminal Justice. That’s about a 20% decline compared with the prior fiscal year. The figures represent the number of times people were sent to jail in New York City, whether for a day or longer, not the number of people who were jailed.

First US National Park to Offer Heavy-Duty Wheelchairs for Disabled Visitors to Enjoy the Scenery (Jen H.)

“Here at Sleeping Bear Dunes, about half the park is designated wilderness so in those areas we can’t do a lot of maintenance or changes [to increase accessibility,]” group board chairman Kerry Kelly told CNN. “So the better option is to have a vehicle that can take the person into these areas so they can experience the trail as it is without having to make major modifications.”

Ethiopia plants more than 350 million trees in 12 hours (Sparky1)

Monday’s challenge had encouraged citizens in Africa’s second most populous nation to plant 200 million trees in one day. In 2017, India set the world record when around 1.5 million volunteers planted 66 million in 12 hours.

Ethiopia’s goal for the whole season is even bigger than that; the national tree planting campaign aims to plant 4 billion trees during “the rainy season” — between May and October — according to a May tweet by Ahmed.

As India’s tiger numbers rise, Modi has gone on safari with Bear Grylls (Sparky1)

This represents a 33% increase compared to the last survey in 2014, according to a statement from the NTCA, and continues population growth that has been observed since 2006.

Fewer than 4,000 tigers remain on Earth, according to the World Wildlife Fund says. Most live in reservations in India, where killing a tiger can result in jail time.

Handles for Manipulation: Knowing our handles

A family dynamics conference we attended years ago introduced the idea of “handles.”  Handles are psychological points for manipulation.

    1.  Alcoholic wife (who is too sick to walk) to her husband:

“If you love me, you will go to the liquor store and get me my Jim Beam.”

The husband cannot stand to be regarded as “not loving” and can be effectively manipulated by this label.  He goes to the liquor store to prove that he loves his wife.

    2.  Older man to 19 year-old (in 1970)

OM:  “Do you love America?  Are you a patriot?”

    19 yo:  “Yes!  Of course.”

OM:  “Then you must kill Vietnamese people and napalm their villages.”

19 yo:  “No!  I don’t want to do that!”

OM (with contempt):   “Then you are nothing but cowardly hippie scum.”

If the 19 year old is strongly identified with being a patriot, loving his country, bravery, and not being “hippie scum,” then these labels are handles.

    3.  Wealthy billion dollar Big-Ag owner seeking limitless supply of low-wage, no-benefits workers for his fields and processing plants:

    Big-Ag:  Are you racist?

    Citizen:  No!

Big-Ag:  Then you must oppose ‘the wall’ and allow all immigrants free access into the country.

    Citizen:  But, but……

Big-Ag:  Ha!  I knew it!  You ARE a racist!  You are one of those Confederate flag waving, KKK pointy hat types who wants to lynch anyone with dark skin, aren’t you!!

The citizen’s aversion to regarding himself as “racist” is so strong that he cannot think.  Which is of course, the reason that threat of caustic labeling can be a handle.

“If you are a ____, then you must do  _____.”

When you know a persons identifications and shadow (shadow = the identifications he abhors), you have found a handle.

If you don’t do _x_, then I will accuse you of being _y_  (insert the pejorative caustic label most averse to that person.)

The power here is my ability to define to you Who You Are without your agreement, or understanding what has been done to you.

As the “dumbing down” of America continues, the use of handles will become easier.

No rest for the wicked as they are too busy destroying the country. Plan accordingly.
