Trump Helps Bring Shunned Authoritarians Back In From the Cold (tmn)

The encounters marked a welcome and long-sought return from the cold for the likes of Putin and Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed bin Salman, who have otherwise been the target of sanctions, isolation and opprobrium from the U.S. government. All came away having gained from the exchange, whether something concrete like trade concessions or more nebulous, such as legitimacy and respect.

Hong Kong: protesters take to streets on anniversary of China handover (Sparky1)

While an official ceremony took place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre to mark the 22nd anniversary of the return of sovereignty from Britain to China, tensions spiked once more in the financial hub after hundreds of mainly young, masked protesters mostly in black wearing hard hats and goggles seized three key thoroughfares, some deploying metal and plastic barriers to block the way.

Defense Department to ban beer and pizza? Mandatory keto diet may enhance military performance (Thomas R.)

“One of the effects of truly being in ketosis is that it changes the way your body handles oxygen deprivation, so you can actually stay underwater at depths for longer periods of time and not go into oxygen seizures,” Sanders said at the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference last month.

Discussion of new dietary guidelines for service members comes at a time of growing concern about obesity in the military and its potential threat to readiness.

Inside the Secret Border Patrol Facebook Group Where Agents Joke About Migrant Deaths and Post Sexist Memes (Sparky1)

“These comments and memes are extremely troubling,” said Daniel Martinez, a sociologist at the University of Arizona in Tucson who studies the border. “They’re clearly xenophobic and sexist.”

The postings, in his view, reflect what “seems to be a pervasive culture of cruelty aimed at immigrants within CBP. This isn’t just a few rogue agents or ‘bad apples.’”

UK: 80 Per Cent of Police Physically Attacked as Violent Crime Rises (thc0655)

Police officers are not the only first responders in Britain to be experiencing rising violence in the line of duty. Trade union GMB released statistics last year revealing that 72 per cent of ambulance workers have been attacked, with staff having been left with broken bones, stab wounds, and bite marks whilst trying to discharge their duties administering medical aid.

There has also been a rise in attacks on firefighters, and two prison guards are treated by accident and emergency units in hospitals every day.

Trump has made taking aim at what he views as unfair trade practices that disadvantage the US a key goal of his presidency, and tariffs are his favored tool for doing so.

The latest chapter in the US-EU trade spat comes amid a trade war between Washington and Beijing that has seen the two sides impose tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars in two-way trade.

Glastonbury fans leave thousands of plastic bottles and rubbish despite eco-warrior plastic ban (thc0655)

There were more than one million plastic drinks bottles sold at the festival in 2017, and zero sold in 2019.

This weekend saw scorching temperatures hit Glastonbury as the UK baked in a heatwave.

Trade Truce Sends Oil Prices Higher (Michael S.)

The political dynamic may also constrain both leaders. Trump is trapped between trying to present a tough approach towards China while also needing to avoid an economic slowdown, especially with the presidential campaign heating up. He will even face pressure from some in his own party. For instance, Senator Marco Rubio denounced Trump’s decision to back off sanctions on Chinese tech firm Huawei.

Guadalajara, Mexico, covered in ice after a freakish summer hailstorm (Sparky1)

Low pressure extending south from the US and Mexico border had been forecast to contribute to developing storms along the boundary separating different air masses, CNN Meteorologist Michael Guy said.

“Once these storms developed, all the ingredients came together for there to be this strange hailstorm over Guadalajara,” he said.

Antarctic sea ice in dizzying decline since 2014: study (Sparky1)

Unlike the Arctic, Antarctica is not warming and remains the coldest place on Earth, as well as its largest source of freshwater.

Its mountains are covered in ice are capable of raising the level of the oceans by 57 meters, according to a 2013 study.

Welcome to the fastest-heating place on Earth (tmn)

Svalbard is unique, but also a microcosm of what is happening in the wider world. The archipelago – which is slightly smaller than Ireland – is at the centre of a perfect climate storm. Temperature pressures come from above (the Arctic atmosphere, which is heating at twice the global average) and the nearby ocean (which brings ever warmer currents from the Gulf of Mexico). As its white, snowy surface melts, the land reflects less and absorbs more heat from the sun. As the ice around the shores disappears, the previous calm continental weather is being replaced by rough coastal storms.

Solar eclipse 2019: How to watch the solar eclipse TODAY when the moon blocks out sun (Thomas R.)

The solar eclipse will be visible over a 125-mile (200km) wide path which spans from coast to coast across Chile and Argentina.

However, the maximum time of four minutes and 33 seconds may be visible only to observers on boats and aeroplanes, as it will be happening over the Pacific Ocean.

A Heat Wave Tests Europe’s Defenses. Expect More. (Sparky1)

It is part of an unmistakable trend: The hottest summers in Europe in the last 500 years have all come in the last 17 years. Several of those heat waves bear the fingerprints of human-caused climate change. In years to come, scientists say, many more are likely to batter what is naturally one of the world’s temperate zones.

Pence Recalled to the White House for "Emergency" "Situation"

    ZH reports:

Vice President Mike Pence has been called back to the White House on Tuesday because of an undisclosed “emergency,” NBC 10 Boston reports.

Pence had been scheduled to land in Manchester, NH, to give a talk at the Granite Recovery Center in Salem, NH on the opioid crisis.  But around 11:25 am today (Tuesday, July 2), just before his aircraft  was due to land, news broke that his event had been cancelled and that he would be heading back to Washington instead of making an appearance in New Hampshire.

No mention of what the “emergency” or “situation” are.

Pence's recall to the White House NOT an Emergency

    • it was only “a situation.
    • it had nothing to do with Putin cancelling his activities today also.
    • it has nothing to do with the national Guard base at Portsmouth NH being on lock down.
    • and is not related to national security or the health or safety of POTUS.

But the stock market did a quick (but small) drop and the 10Y bond yields fell quickly too.

    We are mushrooms.

    consider the source

While it is possibly true that there was submarine incident as per the Debka article it is worth noting that Debka is a known Israeli disinfo site with a neocon agenda/filter and a long reputation of reporting rumor as fact that even suffers a poor reputation for reliability within Israel.

Still   it is indeed sobering to consider the clowns we’ve got ‘managing such a crisis if a report like this turned out to be true

Agreed, but we don’t trust our own .gov so we have to go far afield looking for information. This may be untrue but it already makes more sense than what has come out from our .gov. So I’ll take any report from anywhere to see if the truth emerges and judge each on their merits. Almost no source is automatically disqualified from the start, in my mind.

    Something is Going On

We don’t know what it is yet, but there’s a ton of smoke in the air.  I know there’s a fire somewhere.

Here’s what happened within the space of an hour earlier today:

    – VP Pence Air Force Two called back to DC for an emergency meeting mid-route to an event

    – The EU called for an emergency meeting with its security and defense experts

    – Putin called for a meeting with his military advisers

And here’s gold ever since – a very strong an unusual move:

“Pence had been scheduled to land in New Hampshire at about 11:30 a.m. EST. At about 11:55 a.m., Pence’s vehicle pulled into the White House complex, and the vice president exited and walked into the West Wing.”

Given the time to fly back, looks like gold’s rise is coincident with Pence’s callback and other activity today.

Not a slam dunk, but it sure looks that way.

    Where there's smoke....

Various media are reporting that the fire on the Russian military research sub that killed 14-17 crew members from the release of poisonous gas was caused by “a blast.”

Unconfirmed reports thereafter of a US sub off the coast of Alaska “scuttled” by a Russian sub in Alaskan waters.

Later, within the same 12-hour period, high-level US, EU, and Russian officials are hastily summoned to urgent/emergency meetings within their respective countries/blocs.

Gold takes an inexplicable fast move upward; crude oil is down (some say in potential FF territory to boost price).

Note that we’re less than 48 hours from the biggest, most militarized, televised Independence Day celebration in Washington DC. Thousands of spectators, officials, VIPs and of course, the President and Congressional representatives will attend to witness fireworks, aerial performances (including B-2 stealth bombers, F-22 fighter jets, and more), and multiple tanks and armored vehicles on display. Hundreds of troops from all military branches are expected to participate. All commercial and private air flight over DC will be cancelled for about an hour and a half for the flyovers.

I am praying that the Independence Day “Salute to America” celebrations in DC take place without any (real and/or manufactured) incident. Given the current geopolitical tensions, it wouldn’t take much to ignite or fan the flames of conflict–civil,  military or some combination thereof.  If so, it might rival the impact and aftermath of 9/11.

Reminder that US banks and markets are closed on Thursday (7/4) and on the weekend. Any adverse incidents might trigger “holiday” closures for financial institutions on Friday (7/5)–out of an abundance of caution, of course.

Stay safe, alert and agile over the next few days, folks.
