Greece's life-saving austerity medics (westcoastjan)

The state gives them a short period of grace, but then they're on their own and have to stump up the cash for drugs and treatment. When the "troika" of the European Commission, the IMF and the European Central Bank agreed a 240bn-euro rescue package for Greece in 2011 the condition was that the Greek government should make tax system improvements, cut the public sector workforce and lower public spending to reduce its debt burden.

World’s Biggest Challenge: ‘Ignorance in the Face of Change’ – Paul Hawken (westcoastjan)

But rather than marketing Presidio as a “green MBA,” which would have established merely a niche program, the school pursued a bolder mission altogether; to create a new vanguard for business education in general. This was formed around a core founding belief that has remained true; business is not at odds with sustainability principles, rather, when business integrates them, it can be the most potent vehicle for effecting necessary change in the world. Presidio’s addition of the MPA program several years later was an evolution which recognized that public policy, in tandem with business, would enhance the school’s educational offering towards effecting real change leadership.

Who is affected by big currency movements? (westcoastjan)

Several sectors are being badly affected, prime among these, are petroleum companies and automotive manufacturers who rely heavily on imports. The falling rupee could widen India's current account deficit, which has already been a big concern for the country.

“Why did you shoot me? I was reading a book”: The new warrior cop is out of control

Sal Culosi is dead because he bet on a football game — but it wasn’t a bookie or a loan shark who killed him. His local government killed him, ostensibly to protect him from his gambling habit.

Fail And Fail Well (Ilene)

A study on internet based private equity investors showed that the investor confidence was positively correlated with trading frequency. (Glaser and Weber) Barber and Odean also found that online traders were overconfident and overtraded. The illusion of control and knowledge increased the traders’ overconfidence. Overconfidence leads to more active trading and also to subpar results. Overtrading damages returns.

Dear Leader Dreams Of Sushi (Chris M.)

At a lavish Wonsan guesthouse, Fujimoto prepared sushi for a group of executives who would be arriving on a yacht. Executive is Fujimoto's euphemism for generals, party officials, or high-level bureaucrats. In other words, Kim Jong-il's personal entourage. Andguesthouse is code for a series of palaces decorated with cold marble, silver-braided bedspreads, ice purple paintings of kimilsungia blossoms, and ceilings airbrushed with the cran-apple mist of sunset, as if Liberace's jet had crashed into Lenin's tomb.

Battle lines harden over Detroit pension cuts (Phil H.)

Ed McNeil, a representative of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 25, was upset that Orr’s restructuring team asked union leaders to sign confidentiality agreements, which would prevent them from revealing financial data discussed during their meetings.

NAVY LENR Patent Granted – Transmutes Radioactive Waste (Arthur Robey)

Studying this patent, I can not help but observe that this is an advanced LENR concept and that the NAVY has been working hard at this for quite some time. The patent was filed in 2007. Published and made viewable six years later. Now that this publicly funded “patent” work is finally seen by the public, it should be brought to the limelight of the world stage immediately.

The Lac-Mégantic Rail Disaster is a Corporate Crime (westcoastjan)

We go to such lengths to keep everyone stocked up with the most dangerous products available. Oil companies are drilling to deeper, riskier depths in the Gulf of Mexico and companies are eyeing inhospitable areas such as the Arctic. We mine the Canadian oil sands, despite the horrific cost to the environment. Then we compound all these woes by shipping the stuff through accident-prone pipelines, ships and trains.

Lac-Mégantic's Disaster is the Poster Child for Fossil Fuel Folly (westcoastjan)

"In case you missed it, the oil was being carried from America's new oil patch, the Bakken shale fields of North Dakota, to a St. John, New Brunswick, refinery that, according to the owner, Irving Energy, sends more than half of its 300,000 daily barrels of petroleum products back across the border to the northeastern United States."

Politics of Climate Change: A Well-Oiled Machine (westcoastjan)

It is noteworthy that H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, which would have instituted a cap and trade system for greenhouse gas emissions, had the fifth highest number of clients for whom lobbying was carried out in the 111th Congress. And this isn’t fifth out of ten, it was fifth highest for all issues on which lobbying was conducted.

Urban flooding likely to worsen, say experts (westcoastjan)

In a 2007 report titled "The Coming Collapse of Canada's Municipal Infrastructure," the FCM estimated that up to $90 billion would be needed over 10 years just to maintain and update the existing water infrastructure in Canada.

It said there is a need to "rehabilitate water and sewage infrastructure" especially in older cities like Montreal where many sewer pipes in the downtown were built in the 1880s.

Scientists Invented New Way of Seawater Desalination (Wendy SD)

Desalination of seawater happens in two general ways at present: by vacuum distillation, where the water is boiled at a pressure below the atmospheric, and by reverse osmosis, where the salt is extracted by pushing the water through semi-permeable membrane. Scientists at The University of Texas at Austin and the University of Marburg in Germany invented third way of seawater desalination which is far simpler and requires less energy than the conventional methods.

NAVY LENR Patent Granted Transmutes Radwaste (potentially)

The US patent granted to Navy Researchers mentioned here provides real data indicating the production of particles, which supports the idea of "cold" transmutation of elements.  Assuming repeatability, this is very significant.

The patent office file history also comports with the observation made by others here that the PTO seems to have some prejudical policy against cold fusion (and perhaps probably cold transmutation per se).  The PTO records show that in order to get the patent issued the inventor had to file a statement that:

"At no place in Applicants' specification is there any reference to cold fusion or indication that Applicants' method is related to cold fusion.  Further, as stated in paragraph 6 of the Supplementa Declaration of Pamela Boss, submitted herewith Applicant's claimed invention does not involve excess heat.  Excess heat is an indication of a fusion reaction.  Because Applicants' claimed method does not involve excess heat, Appplicants' claimed method is not "tantamount to cold fusion.".........................

The allowed claims also seem scrubbed of any step or product or mention of any partical emission or new physics.  This is unfortunate and misleading because the whole point of the patented method is for electrochemical particle generation for transmutation of elements.  The inventors argue that they  have evidence of particle production and  the examiner argued that others have reasons why such evidence is artifactual.  This is the most issue to resolve going forward.  Evidence rules and these guys have evidence of  new low temperature particle physics. The patent office should have accepted it.

The patent (and corresponding-detailed declaration/arguments at the patent office) are very helpful because they instruct how others can carry out the same procedure and test to get particle generation.  Also interestingly the inventors explained a difference in their apparatus that differs from the cold fusion folks and that was important.  I dont see how this vindicates a non-existing commercial product from a salesman in Italy  with a known track record of fraud.  On the other hand, data rules and these guys have data that can be checked.  The process of patent examination actually clarified (put on record) the details for reproducing their  work and the issue of how easy it is for others to actually carry out their procedure.  I expect to  see more exciting and useful information about this, not from a website that sells cold  fusion T shirts but from dispassioned trained workers who care about finding truth regardless of where that search takes them.

It is extremely ironic that "cold fusion" workers initially struggled to get acceptance based on getting evidence of particle production (to prove fusion) whereas these guys actually argued the opposite (because no heat and only particles, this is evidence of NO cold fusion).   It is amazing how politics ruins objective science discussion and analysis.

As is usual in these cases...

This "cell" is dependent on heavy water, or concentrated Deuterium, and there is no mention of the embedded energy therein.  Until someone actually does the calculations and accounts for this, I remain unconvinced that any energetic events, including a real transmutation, is not simply the result of unwinding the energy embedded in the creation of heavy water from 2H's naturally rare 0.016% abundance.  What is the true ERoEI?

    History in the Making.

There are no "dispassioned researchers in Cold Fusion.".

Those who are brave enough to study this carreer-destroying field have to be passionate. They are certainly not doing it for money nor for the respect of their peers.

Jed Rothwell who runs the LENR/CANR website told us that he can tell who visits his library. There are some interesting people lurking in the shadows.

The rest of the piece seems to be a hatchet job on peoples personalities. which is a clear admission that the substance of the subject is unassailable and the argument had better be moved onto safer ground, that of style.

A more fruitful approach might be to do what I did, and go to the ICCF 18 in Missouri. I had to fly from the southern hemisphere to the northern. You just have to go down the street. Say hello to the owner of CFN for me, Ruby Carot. You will find she has a degree in science, and is a really nice person and not some wacko.

Be on the lookout for patent trolls. This is an interesting and high stakes area. Great novels will be written about it and you will be able to claim that you were there.

Oh. And the food is really good.
