The U.S. as a whole is expected to become majority-minority by 2044, according to another report from the Census Bureau.
“These latest population estimates examine changes among groups by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin nationally, as well as in all states and counties, between April 1, 2010, and July 1, 2014,” the report said.
Fair Housing Won’t Be Enough (jdargis)
The Supreme Court case, brought by a Dallas-based nonprofit called the Inclusive Communities Project, sued the state of Texas in 2009 based on how the state distributed its low-income housing federal tax credits, a mechanism that provides much of America’s funding for affordable housing production. The Inclusive Communities Project argued that Texas’ decision to allocate tax credits almost exclusively in low-income communities of color created a disparate impact that unfairly disadvantages certain people by race.
The findings are especially notable because they come shortly after a separate research project, by two Harvard economists, that we’ve covered in detail at The Upshot. That project has tracked several million children since the 1980s to analyze how the area where they grew up affected their lives. Children who grew up in better neighborhoods — which tended to have less poverty, less crime, more two-parent families and schools with higher test scores — fared much better as adults than otherwise similar children from worse neighborhoods.
The Advantages of a Second Passport (Tiffany B.)
My experience with the U.S. Transport Security Administration (TSA) reflects the sort of country the U.S. has become. It’s a massive intelligence and security state, with myriad bureaucracies that often operate independently, with little supervision. And our approach to constitutional law is exactly backwards: Instead of actively protecting our rights, our government ignores them until some courageous litigant challenges it, whereupon the Supreme Court reminds everyone of those rights — if they’re in the mood.
Who Owns The Dead? (jdargis)
The days Alison spent at home before the cremation were both “tragic and beautiful,” Knox said. “It was such a comfort.” And slowly, in the years following Alison’s death, her parents found renewed mission. Sanders, who was released from the psychiatric hospital after about two weeks, left his job in commercial litigation, and began offering his services to other families involved in airbag lawsuits. He began, also, to lobby the government to force automakers to install safer airbags and to require them to place warning labels in cars telling parents not to allow their kids to ride in the front seat.
Despite overwhelming evidence that vaccines are an essential public health measure, the number of unvaccinated children in California has been rising, partly because personal or religious exemptions have been easy to obtain. Parents who decline vaccines for their children and take heart from the fact that most other children are protected have helped create pockets in particular schools and communities where the overall immunity level is dangerously low, doctors say.
U.S. Oil Glut An EIA Invention? (Tom K.)
This figure, as created by the EIA, has (with the media’s help) created the impression of a huge oil glut in the U.S. market. No one, either within the media or the industry, has asked for clarification of this number and it is instead taken as gospel. This is now wreaking havoc in energy states such as Texas, as well as threatening most oil companies as well as tens of thousands employed within the oil and gas industry. With such importance placed on a number which has impacted not only billions of dollars in company revenue but many lives for the worse, how can it be largely unchallenged by all but a few in the media?
The new studies do not come as a surprise to hydrologists like Jerad Bales, chief scientist for water at the United States Geological Survey. But for him and other experts, an open question is whether the governments and individuals who control groundwater can or will work to gain more knowledge about the extent of the resource and how much use is sustainable.
