The ship’s most futuristic aspect, though, is its crew. The LCS was the first class of Navy ship that, because of technological change and the high cost of personnel, turned away from specialists in favor of “hybrid sailors” who have the ability to acquire skills rapidly. It was designed to operate with a mere 40 souls on board—one-fifth the number aboard comparably sized “legacy” ships and a far cry from the 350 aboard a World War II destroyer. The small size of the crew means that each sailor must be like the ship itself: a jack of many trades and not, as 240 years of tradition have prescribed, a master of just one.
Eleven of Oregon’s Senate Republicans fled the state this week to avoid a vote on a bill that would cap greenhouse emissions. The group, believed to be hiding in Idaho, left the state senate with too few lawmakers to hold a vote. But the move is more than a legislative maneuver. The missing senators have partnered with right-wing paramilitary groups to threaten violence, should they be brought back to Oregon.
Republicans, meanwhile, say they won’t come back to the state unless the Democrats agree to major changes in the bill. They have argued that although there is a need for action on climate change, the bill in its current form would cripple manufacturing and other industries in the state.
“This bill needs to be referred to the voters,” because it would have such a profound impact on Oregon’s economy, said state Sen. Herman Baertschiger, Jr., the Republican senate leader, speaking by phone from outside the state.

Demonstrators this spring took to the streets of Venezuela in support of opposition political leader Juan Guaido against President Nicolas Maduro, and a projection from the International Monetary Fund shows Venezuela’s inflation rate will reach 10 million percent this year, which would be “one of the worst cases of hyperinflation in modern history,” per the New York Times. Citizens are struggling for necessities: Children are malnourished and dying, and the public health care system has fallen apart.

“We’re grateful the court decision will stop the Trump administration’s blatant attempt to do a favor for their corporate friends,” said Lisa Belenky, a senior attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity, one of the environmental groups that sued to halt the project. “This massive water-privatization scheme is not sustainable. Cadiz will devastate the entire Mojave Desert ecosystem that relies on that water for survival.”
Who Gets to Own the West? (Adam)
Battles over private and public land have been a defining part of the West since the 1800s, when the federal government began doling out free acres to encourage expansion. For years, fights have played out between private individuals and the federal government, which owns more than half of the region.
