Daily Digest 5/23 – Sea Level Rise ‘Accelerating,’ Adverse Childhood Experiences Trigger Addiction

Even Harley-Davidson Can’t Resist the Tug of Overseas Factories (jdargis)

Lauded by President Trump as a symbol of American manufacturing, the company hopes a new plant in Thailand will help it clear trade barriers to woo Southeast Asian buyers.

Addiction doc says: It’s not the drugs. It’s the ACEs – adverse childhood experiences (lambertad)

Sumrok, a family physician and former U.S. Army Green Beret who’s served the rural area around McKenzie, TN, for the last 28 years, combines the latest science of addiction and applies it to his patients, most of whom are addicted to opioids — but also to alcohol, food, sex, gambling, etc. He sees them in the center’s two outpatient clinics: his clinic, which the Center for Addiction Science has taken over as its rural clinic, and another that opened recently in downtown Memphis.

An Underground College For Undocumented Immigrants (jdargis)

Around that time, Verónica saw a post on a friend’s Facebook page that mentioned Freedom University, in Athens, minutes away from the University of Georgia. It was a school for undocumented students who had been shut out of the public universities, offering free college-level instruction once a week. The school’s exact location was secret, because Ku Klux Klansmen had threatened to break up classes and alert immigration authorities. The school’s scrappy unconventionality attracted Ashley and Melissa; their friends were preparing for college, and the twins were restless to get on with their own educations. They filled out applications on the school’s Web site and submitted short personal statements about why they wanted to attend. Soon afterward, they were accepted, and received e-mails with the address and their class schedules. One Sunday morning in August, Verónica drove Melissa and Ashley an hour east for their first day at Freedom University. In the car, they chatted nervously about what awaited them. “Who gets undocumented students all together?” Melissa remembered thinking. “This almost sounds like a setup.”

Pew Research (jdargis)

But despite its size, the scope of FitzGerald’s history is oddly narrow. Like many historians, she sees the 1980s as the moment when the Christian Right “reintroduced” religion into politics—a focus that makes it difficult to persuasively connect recent events, like the rise of Trump, with the long and extraordinary history of compromises and shifting allegiances among evangelicals. For her, Trump’s victory reflects the waning power of the Christian Right’s leaders more than the actual priorities of millions of evangelical voters. Her story follows a single path through evangelical history, from the big men of the Great Awakening to the big men of today’s Southern Baptist Convention. As a survey of the political inclinations of evangelical white male leaders, The Evangelicals is a valuable book, but it leaves out too many other people to yield much insight into the state of American politics, much less the varieties of evangelical experience.

Shale Oil & Gas Production Costs Spiral Higher As Monstrous Decline Rates Eat Into Cash Flows (yogmonster)

As a conclusion, the true costs are strongly dependent on the life span (or the yearly decline rate – referred to very often as ‘legacy’ rate) of the well. So, if a company boasts it has decreased its drilling costs from $10 million per well to $8 million per well, it is just half of the truth as the well may decline much faster and thus produce less oil over its life span and the drilling cost per barrel could be actually much higher, despite the reduction in costs per well.

The 5 Possible Outcomes Of The OPEC Meeting (Michael K.)

A rollover of the existing cuts for another six months. This had been the most widely-assumed scenario until only recently. Global inventories remain elevated, and extending the cuts through the end of the year probably won’t be enough to bring inventories back into the five-year average range. With the markets wanting more, a six-month extension would, at this point, be seen as a disappointment and would likely push oil prices down.

My Electric Bike is Not ‘Cheating.’ And It Could Replace Cars for Millions of People (jdargis)

I tried for a while to ride. I’d bust out my sturdy old commuter, the same bike I’d logged 100 plus miles a week on. I’d ride into downtown Seattle for work, and then, on the ride home, I’d quit at a place where I could load my bike onto the bus for the last brutal uphill grade. The bike racks are great—I’m glad they exist—though they’re a hassle for a short person with weak upper body strength. Sometimes, they’d be full and I’d have to wait for the next bus, and then the next.

I gave up. It wasn’t fun. Riding a bike should be fun.

New sea level estimates show strong, recent acceleration (jdargis)

But studies of past ocean levels have had a tough time matching that budget. That could be because our budget is off, and we’ve mis-estimated one or more of the contributing factors. But it could also be because our measures of ocean-level rise are a bit off. While tide gauges may be accurate, they’re attached to land that can move. This motion could be the result of plate tectonics, or (in some regions) it can be the product of the land rebounding after the weight of a nearby ice sheet has been removed.

Israeli Propaganda Website Says ISIS Behind Manchester Bombing

Repost of Christopher Bollyn’s FB post earlier this morning.

    From the Washington Examiner:
“The Islamic State claims a member of the terror group carried out the deadly attack in Manchester, England, according to SITE Intelligence Group.
“ISIS said “a soldier of the Khilafah managed to place explosive devices in the midst of the gatherings of the Crusaders in the British city of Manchester,” according to the statement, tweeted by SITE.”
How is it that all the information about ISIS comes to us through Rita Katz, the Israeli propaganda agent who runs SITE Intelligence Group outside Washington, D.C. – in Bethesda, Maryland.
If all the information about ISIS attacks comes from Rita Katz, shouldn’t U.S. law enforcement consider her to be a person of interest in an anti-terrorism investigation?

An interesting take on the Comey firing

James Comey is a poisonous snake of the highest order… a deep-water Swamp Denizen who has been highly paid to deliberately provide cover for high-level corruption by the Clintons and Obama. He is has been central to trying to destroy the Trump campaign and then the Trump administration from the start. He is as dirty as they come in DC. He had highest-level cover (the FBI no less) and was deep into an effort to eliminate Trump. Trump had to move hard, fast, and at exactly the right time to cut the head off the snake without getting bitten by the snake or being finished by the other swamp denizens.
Begin by noticing how the President fired Comey when Comey was 3,000 miles away from his office, that Comey had no inkling he was being cut, that all his files, computers, and everything in his office were seized by his boss Sessions and the justice department. This was not a violation of protocol, it was tactical. Notice how Prez Trump compartmentalized the strike and did not inform any of his White House “staff” to prevent leaks. Notice how he emasculated Comey and the swamp denizens by letting them know in a tweet that the Attorney General got information (surveillance “tapes” from the seizure of Comey’s office) to let Comey and his handlers know that Trump’s DOJ has the goods on them. This was a brilliant, strategic and totally imperative move at exactly the right time against horrible, evil and corrupt powers infesting our government.

    CAF on James Comey

CAF has been writing about the money being siphoned out of legitimate government channels ever since the evening of September 10, 2001 at 4:30 PM when Donald Rumsfeld held a press conference and announced that “by some accounts, there is $2.3 TRILLION missing from the pentagon budget.”  (and here)  The next morning the 9/11 attacks happened and the subject fell from public awareness.
When money is stolen from an organization an “undocumented adjustment” is entered into the agency’s  year end books.  The term “undocumented adjustments” is code speak for stolen.
She believes that a corrupt and evil group, a cabal, is systematically looting public moneys and has (or is trying to) engineered a breakaway civilization for themselves.  This is the metaphorically equivalent of having the elite live in a gated community, or the movie Elysium, where the elite live separately in a paradise orbital city.

All You Need To Know About James Comey
    By Catherine Austin Fitts

James Comey, the now former head of the FBI, is also the former General Counsel of Lockheed Martin, the largest defense contractor and weapons manufacturer in America and a former hedge fund advisor.
Lockheed Martin used to run significant information and payment systems at the Department of Defense. They appear to have spun their subsidiary out of the company after DOD closed their fiscal 2015, with $6.5 trillion [with a ‘T’ !!!] of undocumentable adjustments.  I wrote about it recently in Lockheed Cuts and Runs and Crazy Man vs. Criminal: Cut and Run, Monica Lewinsky and Real Trouble Ahead.
This is all part of our ongoing coverage of the ongoing financial coup d’etat and trillions of missing money: See Financial Coup D’Etat & Missing Money: Links and Financial Coup & Missing Money: Quotes
Here is what you need to know about James Comey. Everything he said or did related to Hillary Clinton or President Trump is unimportant. The fact that James Comey did and said nothing about $6. 5 trillion missing from your government in fiscal 2015 ($20,224 per person) tells you all you need to know about James Comey.
Here is a description of the FBI’s legal powers and authority. If the US government is missing trillions of dollars, don’t you think it is the FBI’s highest priority to figure out where the money went and get it back?
If I were on an invisible, secret governing board responsible to preserve the trillions I had stolen, I would sure want to break up the country or be in a position to engineer significant currency debasement and financial fraud. It’s a lot easier than explaining to people that you stole the money that they had saved to pay for health care and Social Security.  I would also want to start WW III – that would keep the power and money rolling my way.  There is nothing like a dangerous fight to provide air cover for corruption and financial fraud. You can blow up a lot of records and make endless excuses.
You should also remember that the last time these folks tried to engineer an impeachment process was when all the money started to disappear from the federal accounts and the federal mortgage programs were used to explode the mortgage fraud that lead to $27 trillion of bailouts for the banks.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Every chance you get to speak with a federal public official or a member of the national press, you should ask one question:
James Comey paid $3 million for his Connecticut mansion. The US Congress can not pass health care legislation because there is no money to pay for it and sorely needs a political distraction. Let me suggest now is a good time to connect the dots between Mr. Comey’s personal wealth and the debasement of the United States and your finances.
