The number of private four-year colleges that have closed or were acquired doubled from about five a year before 2008 to about 10 in the four years through 2011, according to a study last year by researchers at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, citing federal data. Plus, among all colleges, 37 merged in the three years through 2013, more than triple the number from 2006 to 2009, according to Higher Education Publications Inc., a Reston, Virginia-based directory publisher.
The nationwide’s regional table illustrates the extent to which the London housing bull market has out performed the rest of the UK and especially northern cities by typically 30%.
“I don’t think we’ve seen this level of involvement and commitment ever,” said Alexandria Technical and Community College President Kevin Kopischke, who has worked in Minnesota vocational education for almost 40 years.
Markets move on buying and selling pressure—looking at the charts is was clear excellent support was at $26 US for silver and $1550 US for gold. The commercial interests (banks) all use charts and are very aware of how markets move. A huge amount of sales took place at those levels. This is called « running the stops » by the establishment, but it is market manipulation pure and simple.
It broke the psychology of the market, and the market has not come back enough to bring about investor confidence yet.
China says massive area of its soil polluted (Arthur Robey)
The ministry last year acknowledged the existence of “cancer villages”, years after Chinese media first reported on more than 100 polluted rural areas with a higher incidence of the disease.
Premier Li Keqiang announced in March that Beijing was “declaring war” on pollution, as he sought to address public concerns on issues ranging from smog to food safety, but experts warn that implementation will be the key.
Silver, Gold, and What Could Go Wrong (GE Christenson)
Richard Russell thinks the stock market is currently dangerous and that silver and gold are safe. He understands that gold and silver are eternal wealth with NO counter-party risk. What is counter-party risk? It is the risk that paper wealth is not real, that debts will not be paid, that dollars, yen, and euros will decline in purchasing power, that your employer will declare bankruptcy and your pension will be cut in half, that your brokerage account will be hypothecated by management, that your bank will declare bankruptcy and your deposits in that bank are unsecured liabilities of the bank and may not be paid either timely or in full. In short, there is counter-party risk in almost everything.
The onshore wind energy sector is booming in the United States, where there’s enough of the renewable resource on hand to meet the annual demands for 15 million homes. It may take one of the biggest retailers in the world, however, to usher in the necessary change in energy consumption. The American Wind Energy Association said wind energy in the United States accounted for more than 4 percent of all the electricity generated in the country last year and the trend was on pace to continue. America, the AWEA said, is increasingly powered by wind.
Is Natural Gas No Better than Coal? (James S.)
A new study by scientists from Purdue and Cornell suggests that the methane emissions from shale gas could be much higher than previously thought. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, looked at fugitive methane emissions in Pennsylvania by flying an airplane over drilling sites and collecting samples. What they found was a bit unnerving. “It is particularly noteworthy that large emissions were measured for wells in the drilling phase — in some cases 100 to 1,000 times greater than the inventory estimates,” said Purdue chemistry professor Paul Shepson. “This indicates that there are processes occurring — such as emissions from coal seams during the drilling process — that are not captured in the inventory development process.” The study measured 2 to 14 grams of methane per second per square kilometer over active drilling sites during a two day period. During the fracking process, operators at times drill through coal beds in order to get to gas, and methane can escape as a result.
Saudi Arabia and other Arab Gulf countries have said they are taking adequate measures against infection since the first laboratory-confirmed cases of MERS, which kills largely through respiratory infections, in September 2012. Since then, the WHO says it has confirmed 228 cases, 92 of them fatal. The number rose sharply this month. In just the four days to last Thursday, Saudi Arabia notified the World Health Organization of 15 new confirmed MERS cases, including two deaths, the WHO posted on its official Twitter account late Sunday.
But Sorrell notes that the state wasn’t successful when it defended legislation that called for the labeling of dairy products that were produced with milk from cows that had been given bovine growth hormones.
“Because the court found that there wasn’t sufficiently compelling evidence of risk or harm from products containing bovine growth hormone and consequently the governmental interest did not outweigh the first amendment protection of the dairy industry so our law was truck down there.”
