This is Good News Friday, where we find some good economic, energy, and environmental news and share it with PP readers. Please send any positive news to [email protected] with subject header "Good News Friday." We will save and post weekly. Enjoy!

Utah’s ‘free-range parenting’ law said to be first in the nation (sv)

Those activities include letting children “walk, run or bike to and from school, travel to commercial or recreational facilities, play outside and remain at home unattended.” The law does not say what the “sufficient age” is.

Meet the startup that makes milk—without cows (Uncletommy)

Only weeks prior, these three young idealists had hatched their business plan via online video chats. No, they weren’t interested in producing alternatives to milk, such as soy or almond milk. Instead, Perfect Day wanted to use a process called microbial fermentation to produce actual cow’s milk—but without any cows at all.

Alternative proteins continue to move into the marketplace (Uncletommy)

Perfect Day produces dairy proteins casein and whey using fermentation techniques. The proteins are vegan, soy-free, gluten-free and lactose-free while providing the same nutritional benefits as traditional dairy proteins. Perfect Day has partnered with food and dairy companies and expects to launch the first products featuring the ingredients this year.

This incredible animation shows how humans evolved from early life (Adam)

The origin of life, Prokaryote, Cyanobacteria, Eukaryote, Choanoflagellate, Platyhelminthes (Flatworms), Pikaia, Haikouichthys, Agnatha, Placodermi, Cephalaspis, Coelacanth, Panderichthys, Tiktaalik, Acanthostega, Ichthyostega, Hynerpeton, Tulerpeton, Westlothiana, Hylonomus, Phthinosuchus, Cynognathus, Repenomamus, Juramaia, Plesiadapis, Carpolestes, Aegyptopithecus, Proconsul, Sivapithecus, Ouranopithecus, Orrorin, Ardipithecus, Australopithecus, Homo erectus, Neanderthal, Homo sapiens.

Scientists think they found a new human organ—a fluid-filled “shock absorber” (jdargis)

The finding may “necessitate reconsideration of many of the normal functional activities of different organs and of disordered fluid dynamics in the setting of disease,” the authors conclude. And preliminary data “raises the possibility that direct sampling of the interstitial fluid could be a diagnostic tool,” they add.

Chemotherapy-free ‘cancer vaccine’ moves from mice to human trials at Stanford (Adam)

“Getting the immune system to fight cancer is one of the most recent developments in cancer,” Dr. Ronald Levy, a Stanford oncology professor who is leading the study, told SFGATE. “People need to know that this is in its early days and we are still looking for safety and looking to make this as good as it can be.”

Timing your meals may help with weight loss. That’s what it seems to do in mice. (blackeagle)

It is not clear whether TRF works in humans the way it seems to work in lab mice. For one, mice and humans have very different circadian rhythms. Mice are nocturnal and sleep more than once a day. They also live for only two or three years. “It may be that for a mouse, a 16-hour fast is the equivalent of a two- or three-day fast for a human,” says Courtney Peterson, a nutrition scientist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who is doing research on TRF in humans.

Building The World’s Largest Solar Project (Michael S.)

The logic of massive and aggressive development of solar in Saudi Arabia is obvious. Sunshine is not a scarce resource. The country burns oil for about a third of its electricity, a costly way of generating power both environmentally and in terms of lost oil exports. SoftBank’s Son said the 200 GW of solar would cut electricity costs by $40 billion while creating some 100,000 jobs.

Uzbeks told to tend their gardens or face triple tax (Sean)

If monitoring carried out by police chiefs, tax inspectors and local prosecutors find that a household has failed to “use the land efficiently” by not growing crops or keeping farm animals, land tax will be tripled, the report says.

The new regime comes after President Shavkat Mirziyoyev expressed his dismay that citizens were buying staples such as potatoes and milk rather than producing their own.

5,000 peach trees in full bloom (DennisC)

They are flowering now in the 8 hectares of sloping land, displaying pinkish blossoms measuring 3 centimeters in diameter.

Visitors have been strolling in the area and taking photos.

Vaccine for Cancer, "I Am Legend"

Anyone who has seen the awesome movie with Will Smith, “I Am Legend” will be a bit wary of cancer vaccines!

Chemotherapy-free ‘cancer vaccine’ moves from mice to human trials at Stanford
A lead researcher is a Stanford oncologist who worked with monoclonal antibodies.  However, this “vaccine” is not actually a vaccine nor is it a monoclonal antibody.  It is an immune system stimulant.

The treatment is not a true vaccine that creates lasting immunity, but it does feature a vaccine-like injection carrying two immune stimulators that activate the immune system’s T cells to eliminate tumors throughout the body.

We live in an era where autoimmune disease are absolutely running rampant.  Careful with those unfocused immune stimulators!
Some of the trouble with vaccines is thought to come from the non-specific adjuvants added to stimulate immune response.  Kind of like a boy scout trying to start a campfire in a wet forest by adding a couple of teaspoons of gasoline to his pile of soggy pine needles.
On the other hand, I don’t know a thing bout this specific vaccine and it may turn out to be great……

Take a look over the back 40!

Franken-foods anyone? Perhaps an adjuvant to be used in conjunction with Viagra. Agriculture calls them “plant-regulators:

Re:Vaccine for Cancer, "I Am Legend"

This Cancer Vaccine is different than the treatment in “I Am legend”. In the Movie, the cure uses gene therapy which a Virus is used to alter a persons genes. This *may* be a dangerous method because the virus could multate and/or induce multated genes.
The new treatement is just anti-bodies and make the immune system attack the cancer cells. Ther is no danger of someone treated from causing a viral disease. Normally this exactly what your immune system does. Your body does produce multated cells that your immune system kills off. Cancer (mutated cells) become a problem when they continue to grow and your immune system leaves it alone.
I would be concerned with Gene therapy and the introduction of Human/mamaul immune genes into plants.Gene therapy does use live viruses and could mutate into something that causes a pandemic or has some unforseen issues if spreads (either to humans or animals).
I think using HumanMammal immune genes in GMO crops could also become a problem. Perhaps plant diseases could migrate to the animal kindom which would be adapted to defend off. Also GMO crops may also end up producing compounds that mimic human/mammal hormones or other compounds that interfere with normal human lifeprocesses.

    Leave it to the Professionals

Why would you put your valuable cork in a blender?  Experts are born, not made.  Leave it to the professionals, IMO.
nota bene: If anyone reading this is easily offended by SNL innuendo, move along, nothing to see here.
