28 Signs That The Middle Class Is Heading Towards Extinction (pinecarr)

You don’t have to ask major U.S. corporations if the middle class is dying. This fact is showing up plain as day in their sales numbers. The following is from a recent New York Times article entitled “The Middle Class Is Steadily Eroding. Just Ask the Business World.”

David Simon: America As a Horror Show (westcoastjan)

“There are two Americas – separate, unequal, and no longer even acknowledging each other except on the barest cultural terms. In the one nation, new millionaires are minted every day. In the other, human beings no longer necessary to our economy, to our society, are being devalued and destroyed.”

How to Build a GeoDome Greenhouse (Amanda)

The GeoDome greenhouse seemed to be just what we were looking for. Since there is no foundation and this structure can be portable or temporary, we did not need any permits and would be able to take it with us if we would move. So it’s all good! But … How to build a GeoDome greenhouse?

Is Bitcoin Free Speech? (jdargis)

Charlie Shrem was arrested on Jan. 26, but the wheels had already begun to turn on Jan. 24, when a sealed criminal complaint was filed in United States of America v. Robert M. Faiella, a/k/a “BTCKing,” and Charlie Shrem. The criminal complaint is centered around “BTCKing’s” activities on the Silk Road, a Tor-hidden online marketplace for drugs and other illicit goods that was shut down last year. Shrem, who allegedly helped BTCKing launder drug money, is no kingpin, not even if you take the government at its word. Yet the Department of Justice was oddly smug in its press release, taking pains to include the phrase “Ceo of Bitcoin Exchange Company” in the title. This arrest wasn’t just about drugs. By arresting a vice president of the Bitcoin Foundation, the Department of Justice was firing a warning shot for the entire bitcoin community.

Canadian Oilsands Staff Fired, Reportedly Replaced With Foreign Workers (westcoastjan)

“They called the guys into an office, told them that they were gone, and they literally walked past the replacements on the way out,” McGowan said.

He alleged the foreign workers from Croatia are making about $18 an hour — half the wage of the Canadians.

Consumers Paying More as Nat Gas Cash Prices Spike (James S.)

As natural gas prices climb, reaching over $5/mcf again on 4 February, and with an unseasonably cold winter, local utilities say that natural gas customers’ bills are 30-40% higher now than last winter. Last week, we saw natural gas prices rise above $5 for the first time in three years, then falling back a bit only to rise again on 4 February, with March futures trading above $5.25/mcf—or more than 6%, according to expert trader Dan Dicker.

Fukushima Watch: New Technology to Stop Deadly Strontium (kelvinator)

A new method to stop highly toxic radioactive strontium in ground water from flowing into the sea using American technology will start in February at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Among the radioactive materials that were dispersed at the site, the potentially lethal alkaline earth metal poses the biggest immediate concern, because, unlike cesium, it doesn’t get trapped in soil and tends to accumulate in bones of fish and animals if ingested.

Record Strontium-90 level in Fukushima Groundwater Sample (kelvinator)

The total amount of beta particle-emitting materials in the samples are likely to be around 10 million becquerels, far higher than the previous high of 3.1 million becquerels for that well, a Tepco official said Thursday. Tepco stopped releasing strontium-90 data after finding problems in the readings for July and August. It recently found mistakes in its calculation method and obtained new readings through rechecks.
