We Trust You (jdargis)
In the early 1980s, Toyota transformed one of the world’s worst auto plants into one of the best, using the exact same workers. In the second installment of The Art of Better series, Charles Duhigg sheds light on the importance of entrusting workers with responsibility and authority.
Photos: Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (jdargis)
Photographers have captured images of people dressed as jolly old Saint Nick in Finland, Spain, Brazil, Belgium, Scotland, South Korea, Australia, Greece, Venezuela, India, Germany, China, Italy, Pakistan, the United States, and other countries throughout the world. Collected below are recent images of Santa Claus and his many helpers around the world.
The start of Hanukkah and Christmas fall on the same day this weekend, a rarity that comes only every few decades. It means millions of people of both faiths will be lighting candles together, across the land.

Life Expectancy Is, Overall, Increasing (jdargis)
The most important thing to remember about the human lifespan is that it’s risen globally for centuries. Much of that increase is thanks to falling death rates among women and young children, especially from infectious diseases. Life expectancy began increasing first in wealthier nations in North America and Europe, as well as Japan. Now it’s rising almost everywhere.
Rogers Communications, a large Canadian telco, told the CBC that it already offers unlimited data and speeds 20 times faster than the CRTC's target in its whole service area. "While there are still many details to be worked out, we are encouraged by this reasonable plan to help increase access to Canadians in hard to reach areas of our country," said Rogers Senior VP of Regulatory Affairs David Watt.
New Ebola Vaccine Gives 100% Protection (jdargis)
The vaccine was not ready in time to stop the outbreak, which probably began in a hollow, bat-filled tree in Guinea and swept Liberia and Guinea before being defeated. But the prospect of a vaccine stockpile now has brought optimism among public health experts.
A Bronx Garden For All Seasons (jdargis)
Every December, Jada's family turns the Padre Plaza/Success garden into a winter wonderland.
In the baseline scenario, surface ozone reduces the total national yield of soybeans, potatoes, and cotton in the year 2020 by 1.5 to 2 percent. (A previous estimate using different methods calculated losses as high as 14 percent for soybeans in the year 2000, partly due to higher ozone concentrations.) The Clean-Power-Plan-like scenario makes the biggest dent in those reductions, knocking them down by 0.1 percent or so. That may not sound like a ton, but it means roughly $37 million more in soybeans each year, plus $10 million more between corn, potatoes, and cotton.
