Jackson is the 42-year-old chief executive officer of Wise Co., a leading brand in survival foods, that is, Mylar pouches of freeze-dried meals such as Savory Stroganoff and Loaded Baked Potato Casserole designed to remain edible on shelves for a quarter century. Over the past several years, the prepper phenomenon—people geared for imminent disaster—has come out of the backwoods via shows like the National Geographic Channel’s Doomsday Prepper and media reports of the very rich and very worried buying and fortifying luxury bunkers. Jackson’s been positioning Wise to feed the trend. During the call, he felt a rush of conflicting emotions—not so much from the prospect of getting a fat government contract while legions of people suffer, but because the windfall could derail his business strategy. A 2-million-serving order will increase his sales for 2017 about 15 percent but stretch his supply more than he’s comfortable with; his answer to Lee was not an easy yes.
The Psychology of Desperate People (thc0655)
Every year, on “Black Friday” we get a glimpse of the kind of behavior that causes people to be crushed to death and assaulted. The day after Thanksgiving (ironically) people get up before daylight, stand in line, and shove their way through a crowd to get the best deals. (Stay tuned this weekend for the 2017 Black Friday Hall of Shame.)
And they aren’t even hungry.
What I'm (Not) Thankful For This Year (Phil D.)
Factoids are easy targets, but enough for now. Each deserves a column of its own, but it’s time to sit down for a roasted turkey dinner with all of the fixings. The Pilgrims and Wampanoags of 1621 are rolling over in their graves (in between servings of yams, stuffing and cranberry sauce) under the cold ground in Plymouth, Massachusetts tonight at all of the hypocrisy and propaganda shoved down our throats in the year 2017.
Regardless of your personal outlook for the stock market, capturing some of your profits is only prudent given how long this market has been chugging higher. It’s also a way to build wealth, since you now have some money to build a position in other investments.
But what? Buying different stocks than what you own would expose you to the same frothy market. The current real estate market wouldn’t allow us to buy low. And loading up on bonds doesn’t really help since they pay next to nothing despite the bump in rates.
Bitcoin, Bail Ins & Bullion (Diane C.)
If you wait for the next crisis before taking action – it will be too late. In this video, Mike Maloney gives evidence of the looming disasters in Italy, China, and Australia – which of these fuses will ignite the next financial crisis?
“The sugar industry has maintained a very sophisticated program of manipulating scientific discussion around their product to steer discussion away from adverse health effects and to make it as easy as possible for them to continue their position that all calories are equal and there’s nothing particularly bad about sugar,” said Stanton A. Glantz of the University of California at San Francisco, one of the PLOS Biology study’s authors.
Bitcoin: an Unknowable Bubble? (thc0655)
Absence of evidence is not the same as evidence of absence. But, taken together with the general lack of credible fundamentals-linked modelling of the crypto-currency, this means that, at this point in time, Bitcoin price can be potentially driven solely by… err… expectations held by its enthusiasts, plus the incentives by the predominantly China-based investors to avoid extreme risks of capital controls and expropriations. If so, both drivers would make it a speculative bubble.
Thanksgiving Travelers Smash Records (Michael K.)
Experts are saying that in addition to the normal global flux in fuel prices, we can thank this year’s unprecedented hurricane season for the hefty price tags at fueling stations. Hurricane Harvey in particular was one factor that lead this Thanksgiving to have the highest gasoline prices in two years. The nation’s highest gas rates of 2017 were recorded in August, just after Harvey hit the Gulf Coast, the oil refining powerhouse of the nation.
