There’s No Place to Hide Anymore When the Stock Market Plunges (Adam)

Within the S&P 500, cheap or “value” stocks outperformed, although they still lost money. But while Big Tech-dominated growth stocks lost out among large companies, among small companies growth beat value. Sector performance followed no discernible pattern either. And stocks that normally rise and fall faster or slower than the market, known in market jargon as high or low beta, didn’t behave predictably.

Now the froth has been blown off the big disruptive growth stocks, we can hope that the normal market relationships will reassert themselves. But the biggest hedge against losses, Treasurys, probably won’t be back as a useful tool for years, if ever.

The Daily 202: A dozen questions to gauge the political ramifications of Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis (tmn)

An unnamed White House official told the Associated Press this morning that the president is experiencing “mild symptoms” but did not specify.

The president’s physician, Sean Conley, said in a statement that the Trumps “are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence.”

Voters, voting rights groups sue Gov. Greg Abbott over order to close ballot drop-off locations (tmn)

Unprecedented numbers of Texas voters are requesting mail-in ballots for the highly charged election as the nation is in the grip of the coronavirus pandemic. Many of those voters are expected to drop off their ballots in person rather than entrusting them to the U.S. Postal Service, which has been plagued by cutbacks and doubts over its ability to deliver ballots early enough to be counted.

Texas Republicans have vigorously fought efforts to facilitate increased mail-in balloting, particularly in Harris County, the state’s largest and a Democratic stronghold where voter turnout could prove pivotal in this year’s election.

The Truth About Today’s Anarchists (thc0655)

Don’t get me wrong. My heart broke for the people in Minneapolis who lost buildings to arson and looting. Migizi, a Native American nonprofit in Minneapolis, raised more than $1 million to buy and renovate a place where Native American teenagers could learn about their culture — only to watch it go up in flames, alongside dozens of others, including a police station. It can take years to build a building — and only one night to burn it down.

And yet, I had to admit that the scale of destruction caught the media’s attention in a way that peaceful protests hadn’t. How many articles would I have written about a peaceful march? How many months would Mr. Quinn have spent investigating suburban moms kneeling? That’s on us.

Economic Prism: “In America Money Does Grow on Trees” (CleanEnergyFan)

America is presently bleeding like a stuck pig. Public and private debts are hemorrhaging a bloody mess. For example, the budget deficit for fiscal year 2020, which concluded on September 30, was $3.3 trillion. By this, the federal government spent double what it generated via tax receipts and other confiscatory measures. And the federal debt held by the public is now over 100 percent of GDP.

There’s no way the debt will be honestly paid. It’s mathematically impossible. Nor will it be paid through an honest default. That’s politically unacceptable.

Campus Reform: Oregon State prof blames ‘White Christians’ for West Coast wildfires (thc0655)

Shaw is also very critical of President Donald Trump and the Christian Church, stating that “the disturbing link between White evangelical support for Trump and disregard for climate change that disproportionately affects poor people of color around the world should probably not be all that surprising.” Shaw then quotes Anthea Butler, Associate Professor of Religious Studies and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, as saying “Modern evangelicals’ support for this president cannot be separated from the history of evangelicals’ participation in and support for racist structures in America.”

Estimated Surface Decay of SARS-CoV-2 (virus that causes COVID-19) (000)

Relative humidity and temperature can be used to provide an estimated half-life for SARS-CoV-2 with this model with some degree of certainty. The predictive power is limited to temperature between 74°F-95°F and Relative Humidity between 20-60%. The formula below was developed in °C, but has been modified in the web calculator to use °F.

The FDA-approved drug ivermectin inhibits the replication of SARS-CoV-2 in vitro (Ed M.)

As noted, ivermectin was the focus of a recent phase III clinical trial in dengue patients in Thailand, in which a single daily dose was found to be safe but did not produce any clinical benefit. However, the investigators noted that an improved dosing regimen might be developed, based on pharmacokinetic data. Although DENV is clearly very different to SARS-CoV-2, this trial design should inform future work going forward. Altogether the current report, combined with a known-safety profile, demonstrates that ivermectin is worthy of further consideration as a possible SARS-CoV-2 antiviral.

Physicists build circuit that generates clean, limitless power from graphene (Adam)

The idea of harvesting energy from graphene is controversial because it refutes physicist Richard Feynman’s well-known assertion that the thermal motion of atoms, known as Brownian motion, cannot do work. Thibado’s team found that at room temperature the thermal motion of graphene does in fact induce an alternating current (AC) in a circuit, an achievement thought to be impossible.

Mystery of Chinese seeds near solved (TourGuideDC)

The second tranche of unknown Chinese seeds came as part of an internet “brushing” scam, El-Lissy said.

Online merchants create false buyer accounts and post positive reviews of their products to boost their rating on an e-commerce site. Before an e-commerce site will consider an order valid, a shipment must be initiated to complete the transaction.

Study found plastic in every seafood sample it analyzed (Frances K.)

To extract any plastic present, the scientists placed each sample into a flask with an alkaline solvent and agitated it at 60 degrees Celsius in a shaker incubator. Once the solvent had completely digested the sample, the solution was analyzed for plastic.

The researchers then used a technique called pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry to identify the presence of five types of plastics: polystyrene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, and poly(methyl methacrylate).

University Of Cumbria: Adaptation Radicale and Collapsology discussed in France (000)

So what’s happening when people criticize those of us who want to talk about preparing for collapse, whether in the collapsology field or in the Deep Adaptation field, or other fields, they’re telling us that we have the burden of proof on us to say that the red line is not the future path for our carbon emissions let alone the safer lines. Really, we should be aiming for at least the green line. I believe that the burden of proof really should be on them to show us, against all evidence, how we’re going to go down any of these simplified emission pathways to reach these climate targets. I think they can’t prove that this is happening, or will happen, because it’s not been happening.

Wuhan study on long haulers-many antibody antigen negative; neuro sx

Long haul Covid is identified in non hospitalized patients in Wuhan: some are antibody/antigen negative, many have some neurologic symptoms and fatigue. We only test for the spike protein as I understand it, maybe there are other antibodies that could be made with infection that aren't detected.

Self-identified Antifa mayoral candidate is leading Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler in Nov. 3 mayoral election

Portland’s next mayor could be an open supporter of Antifa, the violent, far-left movement whose members have unleashed violence in cities across America.

Left-wing activist Sarah Iannarone will face incumbent Democratic Mayor Ted Wheeler in a runoff election on Nov. 3 after neither candidate received a majority of votes in the first round of voting.

Wheeler beat Iannarone in the first round of voting, but has faced criticism from both sides of the political spectrum over his handling of the city’s nightly unrest, which has included nearly 30 riots since late May. A supporter of President Donald Trump was shot and killed Saturday night during a pro-Trump demonstration in Portland.

Trump has criticized Wheeler for not embracing federal assistance to quell the city’s riots, while left-wing activists have accused Wheeler of being too tough on demonstrators. Local progressive activists have called for Wheeler’s resignation, but the mayor has said he has no plans to step down.

Iannarone, whose platform includes a “Housing for All” plank and a pledge to slash the city’s police funding, identified herself as a member of the Antifa movement in a January 2019 tweet.

“To those who say Antifa are violent thugs: I am not a violent thug and I am Antifa,” she wrote.

“I am Antifa because the Red Hats are coming after brown & black people, after Jews, after queer & trans people, and more. They are coming after our democracy,” she added.

Iannarone’s campaign manager, Gregory McKelvey, led protesters in shutting down a Portland highway following Trump’s 2016 victory, the Willamette Week reported.

Iannarone has consistently expressed support for the nightly unrest currently taking place in Portland. (RELATED: In Their Own Words: The Radical Political Goals Of ‘Anti-Fascists’)

“My daughter was in the streets last night driven by anti-racist conviction. She is not an agitator nor an opportunist and she should not fear for her safety at the hands of Portland police,” Iannarone wrote in a May 31 tweet.

In the photos of Iannarone in the below Tweet, notice how she's wearing a skirt featuring all of her Communist heroes:

"Social unrest" may actually get worse in Portland.  How about other places? How about where you live and work? Are you prepared?

I'm going out again (cross post)

I have revised my own personal risk/benefit assessment with COVID and am going out again.

I carry hand sanitizer and wear a mask in crowded/indoor places, but I am no longer avoiding people.  I disinfect my hands after contact, but shake hands with others because this feels important to me.

The prophylaxis med regime that people here are familiar with seems pretty good.

I have lost weight and am still “elderly,” but no longer obese nor hypertensive.  My vitamin D levels are awesome and the exercise induced extracellular SOD (antioxidant) is great.  The terrain is about as good as I can get it.

And it is time for me to return to work in the emergency department–which is SC2 exposure central!!  I will be working in air ladened with viral aerosols and touching contaminated surfaces many times throughout the day.

I’ll use the  continuous HCQ/Zn prophylaxis the Indian healthcare workers used with very good results.  [Loading dose with 3 days of HCQ 200 mg twice daily, and 400 mg HCQ / week long term.  Supplement Zn, selenium, multiple anti-oxidants.  Get enough sleep.  Exercise daily, spiritual practices.  Ivermectin on hand for an actual illness or a very high dose exposure.]

Personally, I welcome having the young adults and very low risk patients be exposed to SC2 and to develop their T-Cell Immunity.  Such a big group of immune people slows this virus and is of great benefit to the entire society.  It is the most powerful thing a society can do to bring this pandemic under control.

I would tell all the college kids–Please go out, gather and socialize.  (But DON’T go home to your grandparents house immediately afterwards.)

I do believe that this is the pathway to general herd immunity for the society as a whole.

Whoah, this is why I never make assumptions about politics.  You'd think the performance of Ted Wheeler would have disgusted even liberal leaning people into voting for a law-and-order type but instead people apparently think Wheeler was too tough on the looters.

So much talk here and elsewhere about not wanting to be in the city when shit goes down.  But what about a city ruled by sane people?  A man can dream....

Sounds Like You are as Resilient as you can be

    Dear Sand_puppy

Good for you to return with positive confidence backed up by solid and robust mechanisms.

All Panama Guinea Pigs-ten of us are all fine with zero side effects and 8 of 10 continue the 400 mg per week HCQ and some of us take zine tablets but others select to eat high zinc foods. We all live in the tropics but none of us tan.  Three of us at 60 plus, one is 50 plus, four are late 30s, two 18  and 19 but the two youngest are off now,  When they return to school, they may go back on.  They take the decision with their doctor. When far less was known about the virus, the doctor said OK to their taking it, but now they have gone off for the time being, adjusting always to recent information as we need to do especially in these times of info flip flop.   The two youngest have taken some risks, the 30's some risk, the 50's and 60's have not taken much risk.  Panama has had an all mask law for months and strict curfew measures.   At the same time our numbers have been steadily high although death rates relatively low.  We are opening up again now but our government is requesting those who are more at risk to stay home.  I would say that about 90% of the over seventy have relatives or neighbours going shopping for them.  Supermarkets are delivering and low delivery fees also- some free.

I agree with the idea you present to have the younger/low risk go about their business and had posted the Great Barrington Declaration of 4 October, which thousands of medical professionals and public health specialists have already signed.  To me this is the most sensible way whilst we are navigating the meandering realities of the "powers that be" being inept at best, and tricksters at worst  - with no way of knowing what the plan is, if there is one.
