This is Good News Friday, where we find some good economic, energy, and environmental news and share it with PP readers. Please send any positive news to with subject header "Good News Friday." We will save and post weekly. Enjoy!

U.S. Economy Grew 2.9% in 3rd Quarter, Picking Up the Pace (jdargis)

“This is a good, solid number,” said Gus Faucher, deputy chief economist at PNC Financial Services in Pittsburgh. “The economy is growing at a decent clip. Consumer spending will continue to lead growth, and the fundamentals there remain positive.”

For all the quarterly blips, the ups and downs on Wall Street and the back and forth between political parties, the American economy remains largely on the same trajectory since the recovery began more than seven years ago: slow but consistent growth.

The Iconoclast (jdargis)

From the fifties until the very recent past, oncologists focused their energies on three approaches to battling cancer: surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. In the dark humor of the cancer ward, these are known as “cut,” “burn,” and “poison.” Over this period, politicians and activists mounted a sweeping war on cancer modeled on the Apollo program and the Manhattan Project; the federal government, nonprofit institutions, pharmaceutical companies, and private citizens dedicated untold billions to finding a cure; and generations of doctors still depended largely on early detection and prevention, cycling through drugs whose effectiveness was often measured by the few extra months of life they could provide.

Tiny Beads Can Deliver Oxygen Straight To The Bloodstream (jdargis)

The researchers demonstrated that they can manipulate particle size, shell thickness, pore density, and pore diameter through control of various steps in this process. Depending on the rate of different steps, the microparticle sizes ranged from less than a micron to about 50 µm in diameters.

Evidence suggests women’s ovaries can grow new eggs (Arthur Robey)

“I think that these findings, and the identification of the mechanisms involved, may pave the way for development of new fertility treatments or extend women’s reproductive span by replenishment of the ovaries with new follicles,” said Kenny Rodriguez-Wallberg, a senior consultant at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. “It suggests that the ovary is indeed a more complex and versatile organ than we have been taught, or that we expected, with an inherent capacity of renewal.”

Will Electric Cars Be Cost Competitive By 2020? (Josh O.)

Advanced batteries like the ones in question could also consequently transform the stationary energy storage industry. A report by McKinsey & Co. sees energy demand rising 3 percent with the growing need for consumers charging their cars. However, increased storage ability could lead to consumers accumulating power overnight during off-peak hours, hurting electric company profits. Higher performing batteries also mean increased production from natural resources at distributed generation sites.

This Farm Uses Only Sun and Seawater to Grow Food (jdargis)

The farm’s solar power is generated by 23,000 mirrors that reflect sunlight to a more than 375-foot high receiver tower. On a sunny day, it can produce up to 39 megawatts of electricity, which is more than enough to power the desalination system and the rest of the facility’s power needs. Excess thermal heat and water are kept in storage facilities on the farm to use when needed, according to Saumweber. That said, the facility remains on the electrical grid as a back up for 10 to 15 percent of its power needs when weather makes it difficult to rely solely on solar power.

Good News Friday: FBI Reopening Of Hillary Clinton Probe

    From ZH:  "

Paul Ryan Issues Statement On FBI Reopening Of Hillary Clinton Probe"

In the chaotic aftermath of the FBI's announcement that it is reopening its investigation into Hillary Clinton's server, moments ago House speaker Paul Ryan decided to once again get involved actively in the presidential race, and issued the following statement:

"Yet again, Hillary Clinton has nobody but herself to blame. She was entrusted with some of our nation's most important secrets, and she betrayed that trust by carelessly mishandling highly classified information. This decision, long overdue, is the result of her reckless use of a private email server, and her refusal to be forthcoming with federal investigators. I renew my call for the Director of National Intelligence to suspend all classified briefings for Secretary Clinton until this matter is fully resolved."

    And: "

New Clinton Emails Emerged As Part Of Probe Into Anthony Weiner's Electronic Devices: NYT"

In the latest stunning revelation in today's saga involving the FBI's second probe, moments ago the NYT reported that the new emails uncovered in the closed investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server were discovered after the F.B.I. seized electronic devices belonging to Huma Abedin and her husband, Anthony Weiner.

The F.B.I. is investigating illicit text messages that Mr. Weiner sent to a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina. The bureau told Congress on Friday that it had uncovered new emails related to the Clinton case — one federal official said they numbered in the thousands — potentially reigniting an issue that has weighed on the presidential campaign and offering a lifeline to Donald J. Trump less than two weeks before the election.

Until recently Anthony Weiner was married to Hillary Clinton's closest aide, Huma Abedin, who separated from Weiner recently after news emerged that Weiner had engaged in an online affair with an underage girl.

You just can't make this sh!t up.  The comment sections on ZH are hilarious (off-colored, but hilarious).
