Car bomb kills journalist behind Panama Papers offshore tax evasion investigation ‘days after she received threats to her safety’ (Adam)

Caruana Galizia ran a hugely popular blog relentlessly highlighting cases of alleged corruption, often involving politicians from the Mediterranean island nation.

In Malta, she had led the coverage of the Panama Papers, a leak of millions of legal documents last year detailing financial details of offshore entities used by the rich and powerful to avoid tax.

The Resurrection Of The Austro-Hungarian Empire (James W.)

Whilst it is true that the OVP roots are in the far right, in terms of policies, it should be classified as a conservative/nationalist party, not as a neo-Nazi/ extremist party. The OVP do not advocate race laws, the imposition of a dictatorship or the destruction of democracy which would be expected of a genuinely neo-Nazi party. For these reason, I will refer to the FPO as a nationalist right or hard-right party and the OVP as centre-right going forward.

Mapping the blockchain project ecosystem (Adam)

However, as I wrote about a few months ago, the rise of Ethereum with its Turing-complete scripting language and the ability for developers to include state in each block, has paved the way for smart contract development. This has led to an influx of teams building decentralized projects seeking to take advantage of the most valuable property of blockchains — the ability to reach a shared truth that everyone agrees on without intermediaries or a centralized authority.

Amazon Has a Long Track Record of Failures (Tiffany D.)

Amazon Local was launched in 2011 to take on Groupon and LivingSocial. That was deemed a failure in 2015.

Amazon Wallet was a mobile wallet to compete with Apple Pay and Samsung Pay. After just six months of being on the market, it was shut down and considered a failure.

Globalization is Poverty (thc0655)

And then globalization itself is in trouble. The very beneficiaries, the owners of globalization will be. Though not before they have taken away most of the fruits of our labor. What are you going to do with your billions when the societies you knew when you grew up are eradicated by the very process that allowed you to make those billions? It stops somewhere. If those 1000 PhDs want to study a model, they should try that one.

Becoming a Steelworker Liberated Her. Then Her Job Moved to Mexico. (jdargis)

Sometimes a bearing was rumored to have ended up in something notable — the retracting roof of the Dallas Cowboys football stadium or a nuclear submarine — giving the workers a feeling of greatness. But mostly, the bearings were unglamorous. Anonymous. Hidden from view. Like the workers themselves, they were rarely thought of beyond the factory walls.

7 Years & Counting – Trump’s Looming EV Time-Bomb (thc0655)

In case you wondered, this is why larger vehicles and vehicles with larger engines are becoming both scarce and exotically priced. If you’re young – 30 or less – you probably will not remember but there was a time when most Americans, including working-class Americans, routinely drove large cars with large engines. Bought them brand-new. Smaller cars with smaller engines were also available, but people bought them because that’s what they wanted – not because they were forced to by government fatwas that put larger and larger-engined cars out of their reach, as today.

This Tiny Country Feeds the World (jdargis)

That copious output is made all the more remarkable by the other side of the balance sheet: inputs. Almost two decades ago, the Dutch made a national commitment to sustainable agriculture under the rallying cry “Twice as much food using half as many resources.” Since 2000, van den Borne and many of his fellow farmers have reduced dependence on water for key crops by as much as 90 percent. They’ve almost completely eliminated the use of chemical pesticides on plants in greenhouses, and since 2009 Dutch poultry and livestock producers have cut their use of antibiotics by as much as 60 percent.

    It's so blatant

Very sad this morning to learn of the murder of Caruana Galizia. The depths to which some scoundrels will sink is beyond estimation. Let us hope and pray for justice to be done.

    “Hope and pray” don’t work.

    Does anything work?

    The System certainly doesn’t.

    Except for Them, of course.
