Shoppers Came Back To Department Stores In September, Lifting Retail Sales

Shoppers bought more clothes and cars, and even returned to beleaguered department stores in September.

This helped lift U.S. retail spending by a stronger-than-expected 1.9% compared with in August, the Commerce Department said Friday, delivering a slight boost of confidence amid a recent spate of signs that the economic recovery has lost momentum from the pandemic’s toll.

Energy

The first room-temperature superconductor has finally been found

It’s here: Scientists have reported the discovery of the first room-temperature superconductor, after more than a century of waiting.

The discovery evokes daydreams of futuristic technologies that could reshape electronics and transportation. Superconductors transmit electricity without resistance, allowing current to flow without any energy loss. But all superconductors previously discovered must be cooled, many of them to very low temperatures, making them impractical for most uses.

How Transparent Solar Panels and ‘Quantum Dots’ Could Make Skyscrapers Power Themselves

“The new material we developed, and the structure of the device we built, had to balance multiple trade-offs to provide good sunlight absorption, high voltage, high current, low resistance and color-neutral transparency all at the same time,” said Yongxi Li, an assistant research scientist in electrical engineering and computer science who participated in the record breaking.

Environment

Canada is Banning Single-Use Plastic Bags, Straws, and Cutlery Next Year

Plastic is polluting our rivers, lakes, and oceans, harming wildlife, and generating microplastics in the water we use and drink. That’s why the Canadian government is promising to ban single-use plastics in 2021.

Tasmanian devils reintroduced to mainland Australia after 3,000 years

he carnivorous marsupials have been released into a 400-hectare (988-acre) wildlife sanctuary north of Sydney, New South Wales, Australian NGO Aussie Ark said in a statement.

CCP Wolf Warrior threatens 300,000 Canadians living in Hong Kong

    Not clickbait.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/oct/16/china-ambassador-makes-veiled-threat-to-hong-kong-based-canadians

“We strongly urge the Canadian side not to grant so-called political asylum to those violent criminals in Hong Kong, because it is interference in China’s domestic affairs, and certainly it will embolden those violent criminals,” Cong said.

If the Canadian side really cares about the stability and prosperity in Hong Kong, and really cares about the good health and safety of those 300,000 Canadian passport holders in Hong Kong, and a large number of Canadian companies operating in Hong Kong, you should support those efforts to fight violent crimes.”

When asked if his words were a threat, Cong reportedly replied: “That is your interpretation.”

"You got a bunch of nice people living in Hong Kong.  Real nice people.  Hope nothing happens to them."

This continued Wolf Warrior approach - threatening 300,000 Canadian citizens if Canada gives asylum to Hong Kong refugees - will almost certainly have the reverse of its intended effect.

Longer term, this will drive an even faster decoupling.  Today, how many private citizens from the West would take the risk of going to live in an area controlled by the CCP?  That small number will almost certainly drop even further because of these comments.

Canada's foreign minister summoned the Chinese Ambassador as a result of these comments.

    Psychologically prepping for election/post-election chaos

    https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-preparing-yourself-psychologically-for-a-november-election-dis-20201016-g5vg576p4vcj7peuz5xcgdgwfi-story.html

How can you prepare yourself psychologically for the U.S. presidential election resulting in a disaster?

That question may sound unreal. Yet it doesn’t sound so far-fetched to many political leaders and experts observing the run-up to the election. With many more mail-in ballots, which are much more vulnerable to legal challenges, the counting might drag on for many weeks. It may well be accompanied by widespread civil disturbances, serious economic turmoil, and potentially a constitutional crisis.

Is a voice deep inside your gut whispering that you shouldn’t worry about it? An election disaster never happened before, it might say, and so it won’t happen now? (Sure, Bush v. Gore was bad, but predictions about this year are far worse.) Maybe it’s the same voice you heard when reading articles at the beginning of this year about the need to prepare for the possibility of COVID-19 turning into a pandemic?

Our brains have a disastrous tendency to underestimate greatly low-probability and high-impact disruptors, what you might have heard called “black swans.”

This disastrous tendency comes from dangerous judgment errors that researchers in cognitive neuroscience and behavioral economics call cognitive biases. These mental blindspots impact all areas of our life, from health to politics and even shopping.

Three cognitive biases bear the biggest fault for our failure to face the truthabout the possibility of an election disaster.

The normalcy bias refers to our brains assuming things will keep going as they have been — normally — and evaluate the near-term future based on our short-term past experience. As a result, we underestimate drastically both the likelihood and impact of a serious disruption, such as a constitutional crisis.

Another major problem, the confirmation bias, describes our strong preference to look only for information that already supports our pre-existing beliefs and gut feelings, and ignore date that doesn’t. That includes the possibility of a major election disaster.

When we make plans, we naturally believe that the future will go according to plan. That wrong-headed mental blindspot, the planning fallacy, results in us not preparing sufficiently for contingencies and problems. The planning fallacy applies especially black swan-type low-probability, high-impact events such as a U.S. election catastrophe....

John Rubino interview on Reluctant Preppers

"2020 Setting Us Up For the Real Crisis That’s Coming | John Rubino", along with Dunagun Kaiser from Reluctant Preppers.

"In case you were reluctant to start preparedness steps before 2020, perhaps the COVID-19 lockdown, civil unrest, wildfires, hurricanes, and anticipated presidential election chaos have convinced you that having a “Plan B” might be good idea.

According to this widely followed guest, we would do well to heed the lessons that 2020 has been providing, since in his analysis we are still facing the most convulsive crisis yet.

John Rubino, founder of DollarCollapse.com, returns to Liberty And Finance / Reluctant Preppers to answer viewers’ questions and alert us to the critical risks we face in the time ahead. John also reveals the truth about gold’s role in banking that’s starting to leak out, even from official sources.

    Dmitri Orlov - Nefarious Objectives

Dmitri Orlov has an interesting new post, "Nefarious Objectives"  on his website cluborlov.com.

You get to read a page of his thoughts for free; if you want the full article, you need to become a sponsor (but it is a very nominal amount).  Here's the intro:

"Suppose you were one of the evil geniuses who run the global economy. Of course, you would want to continue running it in a stable, secure, profitable manner in spite of any problems that might crop up now and again. You would want to solve these problems swiftly and efficiently without drawing any undue attention to yourself and your evil ways. What, then, would you currently see as the major problems crying out for a swift, preemptive solution, and how should you address them?"

The first room temperature superconductor has been found!!

This news headline wants us to get excited about all this big advance which will remove many of our energy problems now.

Do you remember PV=nRT ?  Low temperature and high pressure have a relationship.  The news article reports " At a pressure about 2.6 million times that of Earth’s atmosphere, and temperatures below about 15° C, the electrical resistance vanished."  If you put a speck of this interesting material in a very complex and expensive diamond anvil and use lots of energy to press 2.6 million times the force of gravity, the electrical resistance fades away.  Our energy problems are being solved by scientists!

The MSM wishes a. to get our attention and b. reassure us that are energy problems are being solved right now because science progress is expanding exponentially.  The Jetsons future is just around the corner and we dont need to live in a world defined by limits etc.
