Several states allow for expunging or sealing marijuana convictions, but obtaining such relief has typically been onerous, requiring a lawyer or court appearances. As more states have eased marijuana laws or followed the lead of Washington and Colorado in legalizing recreational pot use since 2012, some cities, counties and states have simplified the process of clearing convictions.
One way of fighting price increases is by producing competitive generic drugs. Last year, a consortium of hospitals announced a joint effort to do just that. The nonprofit, Civica Rx, was found to “ensure that essential generic medications are accessible and affordable,” according to its mission statement. The founding members including heavy hitters such as the Mayo Clinic, Catholic Health Initiatives, and HCA Healthcare, and last week it announced 12 new health systems had come onboard. That adds another 250 hospitals to the project, which now includes about 750 nationwide.
One of the engineers, Mattia Bersani, said that the sounds in the database could be manipulated with software to produce new recordings when the tone of the original instruments degraded. Musicians of the future would be able to “record a sonata with an instrument that will no longer function,” he said.

He also changed the wording in Psalm 23 — “thou anointest my head with oil,” is what you’ll find in the King James translation. “But the Hebrew verb does not mean ‘to anoint,’ ” Alter says. “The word that’s actually used by the psalmist means ‘to make luxuriant’ — something like that. It’s a very physical word. So after wrestling with other alternatives … I ended up saying ‘you moisten my head with oil.’ “
Alter also tried to imitate the rhythm of the original — which was a challenge because Hebrew is a much more compact language than English.
The spontaneity of online radio feels like an essential rejection of today’s automated environment, but it’s part of a long history of independent distribution. In Britain, pirate radio became an essential part of youth culture starting in the 1960s, playing genres like rock and pop, which the official BBC stations refused to do. In the 1990s and 2000s, stations like Rinse FM would help facilitate the rise of dance and electronic music, as well as grime and dubstep. In America, college radio stations put forth a similar independent spirit, connecting networks of underground scenes away from major cities.
Although the commercial vehicles will be the first fruits of this alliance, Ford President and CEO Jim Hackett and VW Group CEO Herbert Diess explained that they are actively pursuing other areas that are ripe for this kind of collaboration. Electrification is the obvious one. VW has invested billions of dollars into its new MEB architecture for mass-produced electric vehicles (for more info I highly recommend this deep dive by Jalopnik’s David Tracy); Ford, by contrast, is lagging far behind when it comes to building battery EVs.
“History is replete with examples of the power of people and organizations coming together to do what would be impossible individually,” said Viziv CEO and President, Brigadier General (retired) Michael W. Miller. “Viziv Technologies’ young history is a great example of just that—strategic alliances determined to “Power the Planet and Bring Light to the World.” Our collaboration with Baylor University represents the first formal academic alliance for Viziv, and we are excited to officially begin what we expect to be a long and fruitful journey together.”
The U.S. farm bill legalized hemp and hemp-derived cannabidiol last month, creating a rush among Canadian pot firms that were previously unable to enter the U.S. market. Canopy said Monday it’s been granted a license by New York to process and produce hemp and plans to establish a hemp industrial park in the state focused on extraction and product manufacturing.
