Many analysts expect major economic trouble in Italy over the next couple of years. The President of Italy is openly warning of “widespread social tension and unrest” in his nation in 2014.
Green Capitalism: The God That Failed (Pioneer)
Of all the eco-futurist writers of the 1980s and ’90s, entrepreneur and “Natural Capitalism” guru Paul Hawken has probably been the most influential voice for eco-capitalism. Hailed by Inc. magazine as “the poet laureate of American capitalism,” Hawken says he was inspired to pen his best seller, Ecology of Commerce (1993), when his company Smith & Hawken won the prestigious Environmental Stewardship Award from the Council on Economic Priorities in 1991. When George Plimpton presented the award to Smith & Hawken at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, Hawken says he “looked out over the sea of pearls and black ties, suddenly realizing two things: first, that my company did not deserve the award and, second, that no one else did either. What we had done was scratch the surface of the problem. … But in the end, the impact on the environment was only marginally different than if we had done nothing at all.
‘Meat Atlas’ charts a changing world of meat eaters (westcoastjan)
“In the rich North we already have high meat consumption. Now the poor South is catching up,” she said. “Catering for this growing demand means industrialised farming methods: animals are pumped full of growth hormones. This has terrible consequences on how animals are treated and on the health of consumers.”
Research cutbacks by government alarm scientists (westcoastjan)
This week, scientists went public with concerns that irreplaceable science could be lost when Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) libraries are closed. DFO plans to shut down seven of its 11 libraries by 2015. Already, stories have emerged about books and reports thrown into dumpsters and the general public being allowed to rummage through bookshelves.
India: Should tribal rights trump development? (westcoastjan)
When the Dongria Kondh tribe who live in these hills voted last year to stop Indian-British mining giant Vedanta from digging out the ore, campaigners hailed it as a historic victory for tribal rights.
This was the “real” Avatar tribe, Survival International claimed, comparing their struggle to the Hollywood blockbuster.
The site will have its own stand-alone presence but will also replace the Huffington Post’s current world section. The Huffington Post will run the advertising side of the business and will also organise conferences and sponsored sections. Neither side will comment on how much funding has been put into the business.
Natural capital accounting: what’s all the fuss about? (westcoastjan)
Simply put, there are four natural capital accounting categories (air, water, land and biodiversity) and all are interdependent. These provide us with the crucial renewable and non-renewable resources and environmental services that benefit society as a whole.
Our ability to account for these environmental assets and their rate of depletion (commonly referred to as stocks and flows) is variable. In a limited number of cases (such as fossil fuels) our thinking is already advanced, albeit that significant challenges still remain.
More than three quarters of large carnivores now in decline (westcoastjan)
When they looked at wolves and cougars in Yellowstone National Park in the US, they found that having fewer of these big predators resulted in an increase in animals that browse such as elk and deer.
While this might seem like good news, the researchers found that the rise of these browsers is bad for vegetation and disrupts the lives of birds and small mammals, leading to a cascade of damaging impacts.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said he suspected the recent extreme winter weather may be a result of climate change, something the World Meteorological Organization said last year was tied to fossil fuels. Mother Nature may be sending a message then as ConocoPhillips blamed weather for a slump in recent oil and gas production.
