Honey Extraction

As mentioned at today's group meeting, I'll be extracting honey from my hives tomorrow (Sun) at noon.

If you want to observe the process, email me and I'll send you directions.

A reminder: it's a pretty straightforward and quick process. So don't be disappointed if it's all over in 20 minutes :)

cheers,

A

A Great 'Bad' Honey Harvest

I had a bad honey harvest this year. And, boy, is it good.

I say it's "bad" because I had expected to have nearly 10x more honey to harvest by now. My bees really disappointed me on the volume side of things this year.

More Than Honey - The Movie

A new documentary coming out June 12th that looks to have some incredible visual appeal and open up discussion about the importance of bees to our food security and planetary health.  I hope it gets more people talking about the incredible predicament we face with the decline of bee populations and the effects we will have to deal with.

I am looking forward to seeing this movie.  Anyone else interested in seeing this film?

Beginning Beekeeping

At the Rowe weekend, a number of people approached me about my experience now that I'm wrapping up my first year as a beekeeper.

Given the pace of the weekend, those discussions were rushed. And there were several folks I ended up not having time to talk to. So I thought I'd provide some helpful resources here for those considering getting into the practice.

First-ever honey harvest

File this in the "If I can do it, anybody can do it" column...

This weekend, I harvested honey for the first time from my first (and only) hive.

It was amazing. And surprisingly quick and easy.

The hive (actually, only 4 frames of it) yielded over a gallon of rich, clear, delicious dark amber honey. Here are a few shots of some of the bounty:
