Virginia Is Now Paying Residents to Become Beekeepers

Virginia is so concerned about the dire state of our pollinators that it is now offering grants to state residents to take up beekeeping:

The State of Virginia is now willing to pay for you to take up beekeeping.

20%-off Beekeeping Supply Sale at Beekind

FYI: Beekind is having a 20%-off sale on all beekeeping supplies from now until Sunday (Nov 3). Beekind is where I bought my hives and much of the related gear I used this season.

If you're a novice planning to start beekeeping in 2014, this is a good opportunity to cut down your start-up costs.

Bee sting treatments?

Have any good hom remedies for bee stings?

Usually, whatever appendage I get stung on swells up for 3-4 days. Seeing as the bees just stung me on both legs and one arm, I'm going to be looking quite puffy at the 4th of July picnic...

Beginning Beekeeping

At the Rowe weekend, a number of people approached me about my experience now that I'm wrapping up my first year as a beekeeper.

Given the pace of the weekend, those discussions were rushed. And there were several folks I ended up not having time to talk to. So I thought I'd provide some helpful resources here for those considering getting into the practice.
