Exclusive offer for readers: Global Sun Oven Package

Tuesday, November 15, 2011, 7:32 PM

As part of our continuing efforts to acquire and provide special offers on quality resiliency-building products, we are pleased to have obtained exclusive pricing on the Global Sun Oven and accessory kit from St. Paul Mercantile.

Solar ovens are an excellent backup cooking system in grid-down situations. They have plenty of non-emergency value, too. But in times of need, having a simple portable solution for safely cooking food that only requires the sun to be shining is a nearly invaluable asset.

Specifically, St Paul Mercantile is offering us:

  • 13% off the Global Sun Oven, or
  • 20% off the Global Sun Oven package, including
    • The Global Sun Oven
    • Three Sun Dry Dehydrating Racks
    • Roll of Parchment Paper for Dehydrating
    • Two Easy Stack Pots with Interchangeable Enamel and Glass Lids
    • Water Pasteurizing Indicator (WAPI)
    • Two Cookie Sheet/Brownie Pans
    • Two Bread Loaf Pans
    • Sun Dry Dehydrating Racks

This offer runs through December 31, 2011.

To learn more about the Global Sun Oven, watch the manufacturer's overview video.

Special Note: We have put in a good amount of time to review this product and are aware of comments/reviews about initial product off-gassing and food taste.  We highly recommend that you pre-use and wash the oven as directed by the manufactures' instructions before using it to cook your first meals.  As with any new resiliency product, making sure you know how to use it before an emergency happens and that the product is in good working order is key to effective and safe outcomes.  This includes pre-using this oven.

Many of you may recognize St Paul Mercantile as one of the providers linked to from our site's popular What Should I Do? guide (which we strongly recommend you brush up on if it has been a while since you've last read it).  Again, we need only look to the developments from earlier this year (the Japan tsunami, Hurricane Irene, the recent earthquake in Turkey) to realize the wisdom of developing solid resiliency on this front.

Here's the excerpt from the guide that speaks to the wisdom of having a backup cooking solution in place before you need it:

For countless reasons, being able to cook, even in an emergency, is non-negotiable.  Covering the basics in terms of cooking means being able to boil water and thoroughly heat perishable foods.  Boiling water is the easiest and most convenient way to tap into long-term food stores such as rice, pasta, and beans.  Even in short-term situations, being able to cook food and heat water makes life better.

For those of you with gas ranges, you may be able to cook on your stovetop during an electrical outage just by turning on the gas and using a match or grill lighter, but for those with an electric range, or in more severe emergency situations, a backup option will be necessary.

For cooking, we recommend:

• Solid performance – works fine for everyday family outdoor grilling needs
• Easily transportable
• Propane-fueled; takes both small 14/16 oz canisters or traditional 20 lb. tanks
• Customizable with many accessories
• Can be used to boil water

• Solar-powered
• Can be used to pasteurize water and milk
• Better for baking
• Includes 4-qt stock pot with steamer insert

Click here for smaller, travel-sized camping stoves.  We especially like the MSR WhisperLite because it can and will burn anything from gasoline to white gas to diesel fuel in a severe pinch.  It’s a true multi-fuel stove, and this flexibility is valuable.  Whatever you choose to use, be sure to stock up on reserve fuel for your stove(s).

There is also a wealth of advice about alternative cooking methods in our forums.

We welcome feedback and stories from members on how they are using their solar ovens and any great recipe ideas as well.

We hope these special offers continue to arrive as a welcome boon to those looking to add to their current preps and increase their personal resiliency to what the future may hold. Based on the positive feedback received to date, we'll continue working to obtain more. If there are particular offers you'd like to see in the future, please let us know in the Comments section below.

Full disclosure: Based on our existing relationship with St Paul Mercantile, will receive a small commission if you purchase through this special offer. This will not impact the price you pay (in fact,as the offer states, you're getting an exclusive price discount not available to the public-at-large). The proceeds we received will be immediately invested to fund new features and functionality for this site.

We’d also love to hear any feedback based on your first-hand experience with the products and vendors that we recommend through these special offers (and elsewhere on this site). Our goal is to ensure that we’re doing our utmost to offer the best guidance for utility, value, and service.

Sun Oven Pricing

This is John from St. Paul Mercantile.  The 20% savings is the amount you save on the Sun Oven with the Christmas Preparedness and Dehydrating package.  The savings is based upon comparing the offering price to buying each of the items individually from Sun Oven.  The advertisement here incorrectly said 20% savings on the Oven by itself.  That has been corrected to say 13%.

Shortly after agreeing to the details of the offer, Sun Oven posted a special on their website offering free shipping.  So that reduces the "value" of my offering as well.  I'd like to be able to offer bigger discounts on the ovens, but the margins just aren't there.

There are other reasons to buy from St. Paul Mercantile than just price:

  1. You are supporting this website because Chris earns a commission on every sale

   2. You are buying from a company that has a full line of family preparedness items.  I personally answer every email I receive and I can put together discounted packages on any of the products I sell.

Sun Oven Deal

This is a good deal if you buy the accessories for the Global Oven.  I've had a Global oven for a couple of years and use it constantly especially during out hot weather--I live in Phoenix.    It is a great blessing to do all the cooking outside when it is so hot here for several months.

When i bought the sun oven i bought a pot that came with it and it was a good thing since I had no cookware that would fit in it.  I have bought accessories that fit in the sun oven over the last 2 years and I'm happy with them. These accessories purchased with the oven are a very good price in this special offer.

there are also many sources on the web for information on how to cook with the oven, including the global oven website itself.

I don't ever want to be without one of these sun ovens!

John of ST. Paul

Thank you for the reply. I do support Chris Martenson, as do you. I also support many family preparedness stores.

What I do not support is incorrect advertising or false statements.

Here goes, $299.00+zero shipping=$299.00 Total, from Sun Oven.

From St Paul,  $259.00+32.85 shipping=$291.85 Total, a difference of $7.15.

Thank you for the correction from 20% to 13% savings. Now, how is $7.15 a 13% savings when you add in shipping?

Thank you.

John I bought your sun oven

I bought your sun oven package previously as well as other items, and I remember you from the Lowe retreat a few years ago. I have found you to be unusually responsive, reasonable and dare I say it generous in your business dealings.  The sun oven is a big package, quite heavy, and I imagine it costs to ship.  I have valued your hands on approach and like ordering from you very much, and appreciate your efforts greatly.

  LG, normally

LG, normally charges shipping.  They started a free shipping special on their website last week.  When the advertisement was written, their price was $299 plus shipping, mine was $259 plus shipping.  The $40 savings is a 13% savings off the retail price.

You are correct that with now providing free shipping, the delivered price difference is minimal.  It is not generally a good business practice for manufacturers to list their products at discounts (including shipping discounts) on their websites.  It makes it tougher for their dealers to sell the products and it leads to discussions such as this one.  Sun Oven has another business practice that makes it tougher for me to offer better deals to my customers - they sell the ovens at the same price to every dealer, regardless of volume.  With most products, if you buy 100 of them, which in this case would be 4-5 pallets, you get a much lower price than the person who sells one on eBay and asks the manufacturer to drop ship it for them.  Since I have warehouses, I asked about pallet and truckload pricing.  They don't offer it.  I could buy a pallet, but I'd pay the same price as everyone else, per oven, plus I'd have to pay shipping to my warehouse, so my cost per oven would actually be higher, despite spending tens of thousands of dollars and having my cash tied up in inventory.

If we had known that was going to run the free shipping special, we might not even have made this deal available.  Chris likes the sun oven and thinks that people should look into it.  He asked me to put together a package, so I did.  It's a competitive market and there are other discounted offers available on the web.  If you find a better deal, by all means, take advantage of it.

As for the exclusivity, what was meant was that this offer from St. Paul Mercantile is only offered to Chris Martenson readers.  If you go to my website and try to find the Sun Oven special, it isn't there.  It's on a separate page that is not linked to by my website, and it cannot be found through the search function on my website.  It did not mean to imply that nobody in the world could find a comparable deal from another seller.

Too much information, i know.

Received Sun Oven

Mr. Squires,

Thank you for the prompt service of what appears to be a quality item. My wife and I have desired this product for many years. I will let you know how it works; we are currently experiencing an overcast period. Thank you again for the savings.
