DVD .ISO Master Files available on BitTorrent

Sunday, December 7, 2008, 11:18 PM

If you are located in North America, the best way to get the Crash Course on DVD is to place an order for as many copies as you need at www.crashcoursedvd.com. As described in an earlier post, they are very inexpensive in quantity and will begin shipping on Monday Dec. 8th.

If you need the PAL version of the DVD (which works in Europe, Africa, and much of Asia), or if you prefer to download and burn your own NTSC version (which works in North America, western South America, Japan, South Korea, etc.), you can use BitTorrent to download the master file for the DVD (called a .ISO file) and make your own DVD using your computer's DVD burner. Instructions follow:

First of all, you need to know that this is a big file! Downloading it over a dial-up Internet connection is out of the question - it could take weeks at dialup speed. Even if you have a fast connection, it will still take a long time to download, so please know what you're getting into up front! You will need 3.85GB of free space on your hard disk in order to download the file.

Next, you need to understand that the file is only available through a special protocol for downloading very large files called BitTorrent. BitTorrent is designed around the concept of sharing, meaning that the protocol uses everyone's Internet connections to benefit others in the community. By downloading the file from other computers, you are also becoming a server so that other users can download the file from your computer. The only way this can work is if you are willing to adopt a "community attitude"! Please plan to leave the BitTorrent client program running on your computer after you have completed the download. This is how you "pay forward" the favor of someone else making their computer available as a server so you can download the file yourself. This is particularly important if you have a fast connection.

You'll need a special program called the BitTorrent Client on your computer in order to download the DVD master file. If you don't already have the BitTorrent client on your computer, download and install it from  http://www.bittorrent.com/btusers/download.

Next, you'll need to know the location of the torrent that contains the DVD master file. But first, you need to figure out which version of the DVD you actually need. Here are the guidelines:

  • If you are in North America (including the United States), Japan, South Korea, etc., you want the NTSC version of the DVD. Again, please note that you can buy a finished, nicely packaged copy of this same DVD at www.crashcoursedvd.com.  To see a map of countries which use NTSC, click here.
  • If you are in most of Europe, Australia, and many Asian countries, you need the PAL version of the DVD.  To see a map of countries which use PAL, click here.

Once you know which version you want and you have installed the BitTorrent Client program on your computer, you can access the torrents.  Torrents are tiny files which provide reference information on where your BitTorrent Client needs to go to download the DVD image files:

Clicking on one of those links will allow you to download the torrent file to your computer.  Once you have the torrent, double-click it, and it should cause the BitTorrent program to start the download process. This may take a long time, depending on how fast your Internet connection is, and on how many other users have completed the download and are acting as seeds. A download time of several days is not at all unheard of if using a slow connection or there are not many seeds.

When you're done downloading the .ISO file, please leave BitTorrent running on your computer! This will help others get a faster download! We'd really appreciate it if you'd leave BitTorrent running on your system for several days or weeks to help us make the DVD master files available to others in the community.

Once you've downloaded the ".ISO file", you need to
burn the DVD from the .ISO file using your computer's DVD burner. You'll need a software program that
can burn directly from an image file (.ISO file). If you don't already
have such a program, we recommend InfraRecorder, a free program you can
download from http://infrarecorder.org/.

Choose the "burn DVD from image" option, then specify the location of the .ISO file you downloaded using BitTorrent.

That should be everything you need to know in order to produce your own home-made DVDs. Please don't forget to label any DVDs you produce using the approved artwork, which can be downloaded from the Distribute Crash Course DVDs page of this site!

Downloaded and seeding

Downloaded the file overnight and seeding now. I encourage everyone who goes the BitTorrent route to continue seeding the file until they are at least at an upload ratio of 2:1 (more is better) here in the early days of this file distribution.

I'm downloading the NTSC version now, from the Pirate Bay.  20 seeds, download speeds in the 400-800 kB/sec range; I'm on track for about a 3-hour download.  Will seed for about a week afterwards.

Thanks for sticking around and seeding, gang!

I've been seeding both NTSC and PAL myself with constant 2MB/s upload rate over the last 12 hrs and upwards of 100GB uploaded already!

Awesome work you guys, I've got 30 of the DVD's coming in the mail (Christmas presents for folks!) but am also downloading it, and will seed it from a couple of different networks for a week or so after I have it.

Re: DVD .ISO Master Files available on BitTorrent

I'm downloading the PAL version and will seed afterwards (which I normally do anyhow as matter of principal).

I will probably get the NTSC version too just for the sake of seeding it - after all, this message is important.

I'm using Mininova btw - not quite as many seeds as TPB but it's a good reliable tracker and the uploaded torrents tend to remain on it for a long time.

Great idea to distribute this vis BT as well.

It would also been nice if perhaps there was a short summary that's downloadable as well? i.e. Say the 3 E's (expanded a bit) that could be shared by itself - some people baulk at downloading a 3+ GB file but say a 500K summary is small enough that people will download it for a look and then will commit to something larger should they like what they see.

Great work guys

:-)

Now that the torrent has several seeders,

Community -> Distribute Crash Course DVD's needs to be updated with the proper torrent links.

I tried to download tonight but speeds are running around 20KB/s on one site and 2KB/s on the other.  This is far to slow to be useable.  I'll try later on in the evening and hopefully things will pick up.  It may be that there are just too many folks trying to download this right now.

wdstk46,

I'm surprised your rates are that low.  Right now there are 46 seeds for NTSC and 26 seeds for PAL.  The speed of people downloading NTSC and PAL at the moment range from 30KB/s up to 400+KB/s.

Might be that there are still a lot of people in the queue ... currently 53 trying to download NTSC and 45 trying to download PAL.  Try again later and see if it improves.

I downloaded it and accidentally deleted it from utorrent so i'm not seeding. Does anyone know how I can get it back in utorrent to seed?

You might want to try downloading the torrent file again and double click on it.  If you have the .ISO file saved in the same location, it should recognize it, and start offering it as a seed.

Re: DVD .ISO Master Files available on BitTorrent

This file is huge and while my connection is good but my harddrive is tiny and full(80 gigabytes). However, due to a recent issue with my bank between one online place accidentally overcharging me into overdraft and my bank subsequently hitting me with multiple $35 overdraft fees at once, and daily phone calls between the two companies not getting me anywhere as they each tell me to take it up with the other, I'm stuck doing this.

Is there a way to compress it to a smaller size once I've downloaded it?

Are you behind a firewall?

Check your firewall settings. I had this same problem at first. Find out what port your software is using and add it to your firewall. You could also add your PC's IP address to the DMZ on your firewall. The DMZ option basicly bypasses the firewall and should only be used temporarily.

Not really, it's already pretty well compressed. I'd just burn it to a DVD and delete the file. Once you get your harddrive situation straight you can recreate the .iso from the DVD if you like or, just download it again.

You could use a program such as magic DVD to rip it to an AVI file which would probably be about 1GB.

Good idea. I have several other ideas too but I'm guessing they might fall under this rule:

Quote:

1. No content modification is permitted.

We are making this fantastic video product available for free under the condition that it be copied exactly, without modification. You may not re-master the DVD to add your own opinions, commentary, marketing, or anything else. To thwart abuse of this policy, we will very strongly condemn any "modified versions" and we'll encourage everyone to boycott any business or individual selling such a version, if any are ever produced. The addition of copy protection to the DVD would be considered a content modification and is prohibited.

Would modifying the file type or distribution method be considered a modified version or only modifying the content?

So far all I have read is that burning and copying DVDs is allowed doesn't mention conversion to some other format. That's why I didn't bother to mention them before.Smile

MAC Download

ok, I was not able to get over 40 KB/s with 3 seeds, 40 being very rare, under 20 was normal, right now I'm at zero ... so I did this speed test ..

As you can see, I dont have a problem on my end ... any thoughts?

EDIT: 2 peers (all seeds)

UPDATE 07:21.. (1) seed

Re: DVD .ISO Master Files available on BitTorrent

Speed tests are right next to useless. They only show your theoretical max speed to that specific machine. There are about a zillion variables that could be causing your problem. First of all, you're only connected to two peers and they can only upload so fast. I currently have 5 peers splitting my max upload of about 60 kb/s. It took me a couple hours to DL the 3.75gb file but it has taken 21.5 hrs to upload 3 gb.

Almost every time I have seen a speed problem with a torrent DL it has been because of a firewall setting.

Are you behind a firewall?  I'd check that first.

The other times is when a million people are trying to get it at the same time in the first few hours. It usually speeds up as more people get more pieces.

Don't take this the wrong way but, are you sure? I don't know your setup is why I ask. I have a software firewall running on my machine but my cable modem also has a built in firewall/router. I have a bad habit of forgetting this because I don't make changes very often. I have struggled with similar situations and then it hits me...I never changed the settings in the other place! Embarassed LOL.

Re: DVD .ISO Master Files available on BitTorrent

We're working on getting YouTube versions of the Crash Course files uploaded. When they are there, downloading all the youtube files would be an alternative way to have the Crash Course in a smaller footprint.

The "No Content Modification" thing is a rule we intend to enforce for copies that are redistributed to others. We wish to control the format that is disseminated, which is the reason for this rule. If you want to do something unusual for your own use, we don't care, provided that you don't redistribute the modified version to other people.

OK Mo, apparently there is some bad blood between BitTorrent & Comcast (according to the comcast tech). They gave me free powerboost  also for 48 hrs & suggested Limewire, which I downloaded for free. I am now humming along at  391kbs from 19 hosts. This is my first attempt ever (in 19 years on the web) of a video of any kind, so it's all new to me in that respect ... Thanks for your input Mo, that's what got me moving on this.

Reply to this post with your email or snail mail address and I will send you a copy of the DVD in the mail for free.  It'll cost me less than $1...

I think you can contact me here, too:

Oh good, I'm glad you got it working. I didn't know about the problems between bittorrent and comcast. I can't say I'm surprised though. I'll have to remember that in the future.

Ah interesting ... thanks for sharing with us what was happening Tom!  I'm not sure if you've heard about the past issues with Comcast's unlimited service not being so "unlimited".  This came to light last year.  If you're interested in reading about it, the article is here:

http://consumerist.com/consumer/comcast/comcast-customer-uses-unlimited-service-excessively-gets-disconnected-for-a-year-235585.php

Hopefully you're able to now get the file with no significant issues.

woodman,

You can highlight the file being uploaded, then click the "Peers" tab in the area right below it.  It will show you who is connected to your seed, the rate of speed at which they are receiving your upload, and the collective speed they are getting from all available seeds.  It also shows how far they are in completing the overall download.  Let me know if you have further questions.

sjdavis,

BitTorrent is smart enough to connect to any available seeds whenever they are available.  So for example, if someone is downloading from you, and then you turn off your computer, it will just shift the processing to other available seeds.  If then you turn on your computer in the morning and re-connect to BitTorrent, it will look to see who is needing a seed, and connect you to them if you are available.

My assumption would be that most people would be able to more easily have their computer work as a seed during the night time when they are not using it.

kemosavvy,

Most likely it showed up as a winzip file because your winzip application is configured to have .ISO extensions as an associated mime type.  An .ISO file is in some ways like a zip file ... it is a collection of video and audio files which are structured in a format to be run from a DVD.  Any .ISO file can be "unzipped" to show its contents.

As long as you still have the downloaded file, I'm certain it is in an .ISO file fomat.  You just need to burn it to a DVD per the instructions.

Re: DVD .ISO Master Files available on BitTorrent

I give up.  I am now getting speeds up to 100KB/sec but that is sporadic and not worth doing.  I can do almost 2MB/sec to almost any server in the U.S. with the bandwidth to dish it up so I think Comcast may be the problem.  It sure sounded like a good idea :-)

UPDATE

The problem seems to be the Mac OSX version of Bit Torrent.  I switched over to Windows XP (I run both OSs on my machine) and tried the Windows version and my speeds jumped to over 1MB/sec.  Much better.  No changes to firewalls.

Re: DVD .ISO Master Files available on BitTorrent

Using Max OS X and had no problem with downloading the .iso file under 4 hours. In fact there are different BitTorrent clients for Mac, the best being Transmission - http://www.transmissionbt.com/ .

However, after I finally downloaded the 3.5 GB ISO file I have problem burning it correctly with Disk Manager. The burn process gets almost to the end then an error message pops up that 'device failed to respond correctly' etc. It might be a problem with my SuperDrive, but I recently burned other DVDs without any problems. Anyone experienced this?

It's not a question of the Mac being to handle the torrent client, it's the ISP being comfortable with the torrent client. In my case (Comcast) & BitTorrent are still having their moments. After I hooked up with Limewire, I was able to get get it done in 2+ hours, and burned in a few minutes.
