290,000 New Jobs Created In April, But Unemployment Rate Jumps To 9.9% (mhoop)

In April, the number of unemployed persons was 15.3 million, and the unem- ployment rate edged up to 9.9 percent. The rate had been 9.7 percent for the first 3 months of this year.

Alan Grayson Comedic Stand Up Special On The Bankrupt Red Roof Inn Chain And Its Proud Owner, The Federal Reserve (mhoop)

When we disclosed that the Fed was getting crammed down last week on Red Roof Inn foreclosures, little did we know that Alan Grayson was going to take the material and make pure comedic poetry out of it. One more reason to applaud the brilliance of our corrupt and moronic Senators for preventing the much needed and long-overdue audit of the Fed. Enjoy.

Google invests in North Dakota wind farms (Samuel A.)

Google Inc. has bought a $38.8 million stake in two North Dakota wind farms — an investment that a state regulator believes will spur more interest in the state's growing wind energy industry.

Environment

The Goats Are Baaaahk (Samuel A.)

Last year, in our quest to minimize our carbon footprint (and keep people on their toes), we [Google] turned to an unlikely solution for mowing an overgrown field: goats. More than 200 goats from California Grazing have once again arrived at our Mountain View headquarters where they’ll stay for over a week chomping away on grassy goodness. The cost of bringing in the goats is comparable to hiring lawn mowers for the same job and the green benefits are clear: the goats eliminate mower emissions, reduce noise pollution, restore plant species and fertilize while grazing.

"BERLIN — Chancellor Angela Merkel, beleaguered by her handling of the Greek financial crisis, her squabbling government and disgruntlement over hardship in Germany’s rust belt, had historic losses Sunday in crucial regional elections in North Rhine-Westphalia, where exit polls suggested her coalition was trounced.

If the results are confirmed, Mrs. Merkel will lose her majority in the Bundesrat, the upper house of Parliament, which signs off on legislation and contains representatives from each of the 16 states in Germany.

That would mean that Mrs. Merkel would no longer be able to push through decisive changes. She had initiated few since taking office for a second term eight months ago because of infighting in the coalition of her conservative Christian Democrats and pro-business Free Democrats.

Just three days after British voters left their national leadership in limbo, the biggest state in Germany followed suit, punishing Mrs. Merkel’s coalition but handing little satisfaction to the opposition Social Democrats. The future shape of the state’s government was unclear."

The EU is putting together a 1 trillion dollar relief package with the member countries, the IMF and the ECB. Perhaps that is the reason the market futures were up today... Obama was on the phone with people in Europe over the weekend urging them to act quickly to wave the magic monetary wand and make all the market angst  disappear back into the closet for a while.
