Breaking: Greece Threatens To Leave Eurozone, Reintroduce Own Currency (jdargis)

Alarmed by the efforts of the European Commission on Friday evening an emergency meeting in Luxembourg has loaded. Apart from the possible withdrawal of Greece from the monetary union and a speedy rescheduling of the country is on the agenda. A year after the outbreak of the crisis in Greece this means for the European Monetary Union an existential turning point - regardless of what option they choose.

Listen to the IMF, America (jdargis)

Slightly more than 13 years ago, at the IMF's 1997 Hong Kong meeting, the fund had attempted to amend its charter in order to gain more leeway to push countries toward capital-market liberalization. The timing could not have been worse: The East Asia crisis was just brewing—a crisis that was largely the result of capital-market liberalization in a region that, given its high savings rate, had no need for it.

Europe Is Running A Giant Ponzi Scheme (Duncan S.)

It could be claimed that this mechanism is helping the countries involved since the official loans, although onerous, carry better conditions than the ones that need to be serviced. But the countries’ debts will increase (as a percentage of GDP the debts of Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain are expected to be higher by the end of 2012 than at the start of the crisis). The share of debt owed to the official sector will also increase (in addition to the bond purchases by the European Central Bank, which reportedly owns 17 per cent of these countries’ bonds with a much higher percentage held as collateral).

Citizens Republic Settles Detroit-Bias Claims (phil)

Citizens Republic Bancorp had total assets of $10.6 billion, with $8.1 billion in deposits, as of October of last year, according to court papers. Its largest operation is in Michigan through its Citizens Bank subsidiary, which has more than 150 branches.

Citizens Republic Bancorp currently operates nine branches within twenty miles of Detroit, but all of branches save one are located in majority-white census tracts. None are in the city limits of Detroit.

Protests Across Syria Despite Military Presence (jdargis)

The worst violence was reported in Homs, Syria’s third largest city, where activists described a chaotic, bloody day, as tanks entered the town. The government said 10 soldiers had been killed there by what it described as “terrorists,” while activists said at least 9 soldiers had defected to their side. Sixteen protesters were killed, they said.

Payrolls Show Strong Growth but Jobless Rate Rises (jdargis)

The monthly snapshot of the job market showed that government workers continued to receive pink slips, but the private sector more than picked up the slack, adding 268,000 jobs in April, the most in five years. Hiring was spread broadly, with manufacturing, retail, health care, and leisure and hospitality industries all expanding.

Bloomberg to Lay Off Thousands of Teachers (jdargis)

The job cuts are part of Mr. Bloomberg’s effort to slice an additional $400 million from various city agencies. He needs to plug a multibillion-dollar deficit in his $65.6 billion spending plan for the fiscal year that begins July 1. That budget is about the same size as the current one.

Rural Revolution (beth)

Record floods on Mississippi

Record floods on Mississippi River, Lake Champlain; 3rd EF-5 tornado verified - The Ohio River at Cairo, Illinois continues to fall today, with a level of 59.3', 2.5' below the all-time peak of 61.8' set on Monday night. On Monday night, the Army Corps of Engineers was forced to intentionally destroy a levee at Birds Point on the west bank of the Mississippi, just downstream from Cairo, Illinois, in order to relieve pressure on the levees in Cairo and save that city from a billion-dollar levee breach. The destruction of the Birds Point levee also helped slow the rise of the Mississippi River just south of its confluence with the Ohio River, but the river is still rising slowly, and has now set all-time records at New Madrid, Missouri, Tiptonville, Tennessee, and Caruthersville, Missouri--a 70-mile stretch of river downstream from Cairo. Currently, the Mississippi is expected to reach its 2nd highest level on record at Memphis on May 10, cresting at 48.0'. The all-time record at Memphis occurred during the great flood of 1937, when the river hit 48.7'. Downstream from Memphis, flood waters pouring in from the Arkansas River, Yazoo River, and other tributaries are expected to swell the Mississippi high enough to beat the all-time record at Vicksburg, Mississippi by 1.3' on May 20, and smash the all-time record at Natchez, Mississippi by six feet on May 22, and by 3.2 feet at Red River Landing on May 23. Red River Landing is the site of the Old River Control Structure, the Army Corps' massive engineering structure that keeps the Mississippi River from carving a new path to the Gulf of Mexico. I'll have a detailed post talking about the Old River Control Structure next week. Its failure would be a serious blow to the U.S. economy, and the great Mississippi flood of 2011 will give the Old River Control Structure its most severe test ever. Also of concern is the forecast for the Mississippi to crest at 19.5 feet in New Orleans on May 24. The levees in New Orleans protect the city for a flood of 20.0 feet--that is not much breathing room.

Italy patents Rossi's cold fusion device.

I only mention this offensive subject because it is bigger than fire.

Greece embraces cold fusion.

A factory located in Xanthi, Greece plans to use an array of smaller models of the publicly demonstrated 12 Kw ECat, linked together, to generate 1Mw power for the purpose of manufacturing more ECats................

.................The dollar, once “as good as gold”, became a petro-dollar linked with the currency of oil and as cold fusion technology permeates society, the dollar will not retain its status as the world’s reserve currency.

It appears that necessity is the mother of invention.

More bad taste

I wil not engage in light hearted banter about afronts to ones cherished atomic theory or even apologise for imposing the indignity of inspecting my gentle readers' "Common sense".

I shall report on this rapidly moving field of Low Energy Nuclear Reactions for the adults to examine, or not, as they see fit. And let events unfold as they must.

Jed Rothwell's two page essay on the likely consequences of these benchtop experiments and demonstrations come highly commended. Even though it is dated (1998) and some of the comments anachronistic (for instance he assumes that we would be using palladium and heavy water, and that the metal is the catalyst and not the fuel), it is never-the-less insightful.

http://www.infinite-energy.com/iemagazine/issue1314/future.html

The real catastrophe is that once society has become comfortable with the concept, we will be back to square one when the next challenge to our model of reality appears.

It will be groundhog day all over again.

Rossi

Comments at the cited website http://coldfusionnow.wordpress.com/2011/05/07/italy-patents-rossi-cold-fusion/ said that the "Patent is only valid in Italy" and "Unfortunately, the patent cannot be read, so we do not know much technical stuff about it except the title."

It looks like this is a patent application (not an issued patent), and the application was published as WO/2009/125444 in 2009.

If you want to judge the merits of the concept yourself, just do a google search for WO/2009/125444 and the results will point you to the WIPO website which shows the published application.
