Durable Goods, Stock Market, Fed in the Driver's Seat & Why (Ilene)

"It was just another one of their serial blunders. It's just that some of their mistakes look good on the surface for a while until the unintended consequences overwhelm the intended ones. That one went bad immediately. I was shocked at the time that they would sterilize the alphabet soup programs that started with the TAF in 2007, by pulling the funds from the SOMA, thus crippling the Primary Dealers. I warned repeatedly that it would precipitate a crash, especially as the Treasury began selling over $100 billion a week in new debt to fund the TARP in Q3 2008. Bernanke fucked up, plain and simple. They started to realize the mistake in November by starting direct purchases of limited amounts of GSE paper, but didn't go full bore until they started massive Treasury purchases in March 2009. That turned the market."

You'll Never Guess What Thieves Are After Now (Ben Johnson)

Law enforcement in at least eight states this year have been reporting rashes of tailgate thefts. Unlike the stuff you might leave on the seat of your truck, the tailgates are not protected by locks or barriers such as windows. Thieves have become adept at wrenching the tailgates, as well as pricey accessories, off the truck.

French Bread Spiked With LSD In CIA Experiment (Chris M.)

Eventually, it was determined that the best-known local baker had unwittingly contaminated his flour with ergot, a hallucinogenic mould that infects rye grain. Another theory was the bread had been poisoned with organic mercury.

However, H P Albarelli Jr., an investigative journalist, claims the outbreak resulted from a covert experiment directed by the CIA and the US Army's top-secret Special Operations Division (SOD) at Fort Detrick, Maryland.

Syrian Refugees (jdargis)

Syrian refugees are seen through a barbed wire as they arrive at border between Syria and Turkey, near Reyhanli, Hatay province, on March 27. Syrian President Bashar Assad's crackdown on dissent, which monitors say has seen more than 9,100 people killed since March 2011, triggered an influx of refugees on the Turkish border as officials say the current number exceeds 17,000.

MF Global Official Pleads the Fifth in Case of Missing $1.6 Billion (June C.)

Former MF Global Assistant Treasurer Edith O’Brien, whose name has surfaced regarding a $200 million transfer to cover an overdraft at JP Morgan Chase, refused to answer any questions before the committee. “On the advice of counsel I respectfully decline to answer based on my constitutional right,” said O’Brien, who appeared to be clutching rosary beads she sat at the witness table. She was dismissed from the hearing and left with her lawyer.

Fake Bars - The Facts (June C.)

As to the frequency of fakes, note that the previous “incident” that Zero Hedge referred to was this post of January 2010. As I pointed out in on my personal blog at the time, the Argor Heraeus video showed a fake bar received more than ten years prior. So sorry Zero Hedge, this is not two incidents in two years. Argor Heraeus said that “counterfeit bars are extremely rare, our colleagues from the foundry cannot recall a single instance in the last years in which such a bar was delivered to Heraeus for processing.” This agrees with The Perth Mint’s experience.

Energy

A New Industry to be Born from the End of North Sea Oil (James S.)

Suggestions that the life of production platforms could be extended by the widespread conversion to alternative uses, such as bases for wind turbine generators, are probably not economically viable.

Platforms cost a fortune to service and maintain while the revenue from turbines is relatively small. A few platforms in shallower waters could provide electrical connection bases for offshore wind farms; the platform would carry the electrical collection and transmission equipment gathering power from individual turbines and managing the transmission to land through existing power cable connections.

The Limitless Potential of the E-Cat: An Interview with Andrea Rossi (James S.)

Andrea Rossi appears to have produced the first working “cold” fusion device, or low energy nuclear reaction (LENR), with his Energy Catalyser (E-Cat) machine; a technology previously declared impossible by the scientific community.

The E-Cat machine could provide almost limitless, clean, cheap energy and could prove to be one of the greatest inventions of all time. Rossi could become one of the most revolutionary scientists since Darwin.

Swimming On The Hot Side (jdargis)

Hundreds of cities have their own version of Indian Point somewhere out in the gloaming, and millions of Americans live with the jittery bargain these plants present. Indian Point, for instance, supplies New York City with up to 30 percent of its electricity, and no realistic energy alternatives have yet been put forth if the plant were to be shut down. It remains true that nuclear power is the cleanest and safest form of energy currently in wide use in the U.S. Of course, the same was true in Japan until last year.

Carbon Map Infographic: A New Way To See The Earth Move (Marc H.)

How can you map the world to show global data in an immediately clear way? How can you show two datasets at once to see how they compare? Kiln, a partnership of Guardian writer Duncan Clark and developer Robin Houston has come up with this beautiful new take on the globe.

E-Cat article

I have heard about the E-Cat machine before and was just reading the article given above.  Does anybody know what the latest on this is?  My bulls**t meter is sounding all kinds of alarms over this.  The last I heard, he hasn't published any peer reviewed articles and won't let anybody independently verify it.

Although there is some excitement out there, nothing has changed.  It is still un-peer reviewed and untested.  I'll wait to get excited.

E-Cat article

Rossi seems to be engaging in either self-deception or fraud. The Wikipedia article is a good place to start for anyone who wants to learn the background of the E-Cat claims. We're not talking about someone stumbling onto some nifty little chemical catalyst. The coulomb barrier for the claimed hydrogen/nickel fusion to copper is so high that it occurs nowhere in the known universe, including the interior of stars.

I especially like how Rossi calls his self-published blog, "Journal of Nuclear Physics".

If you can remember anything from your high school chemistry and physics classes, this blog post is a good read:

The search for the magical technological solution to our energy woes continues.

Rossi Tells Oilprice.com 1 MW Plant Will Soon Be Opened to Public

March 30, 2012

A new interview by James Burgess with Andrea Rossi has been published at the Oilprice.com web site. An extensive list of questions are dealt with, many of which are answered by Rossi in a manner that will not be unfamiliar to follower of the E-Cat story, however there some interesting details that come out in the interview which provide...

Sorry, after further review and following the links, the above story is ultimately the same one as linked to in the New Headlines.  Never mind.

My Naievity.

On reflection after posting my "Got Gold" piece and cross-link  it accured to me to follow the money.

Who Benefits from a fake gold bar discovery?

Would anti-gold Ben Bo benefit? Is the Pope a catholic? Is this a sign of desperation in the fiat money camp that they would do such a thing.

Of cause not. I am being paranoid.

E-Cat article

That definitely sounds bad.  I was around for the Pons-Fleishman fiasco, and it was their reluctance to publish enough information for proper independent testing that sounded the alarms then.
