How China's Boom Caused The Financial Crisis (jdargis)

The immediate cause of the housing bubbles in the United States and the eurozone periphery was not regulatory oversight failure, but the precipitous drop in interest rates in the early 2000s. And the country that bears partial responsibility for depressing interest rates is a traditional punching bag in the American political arena, one that has somehow avoided most of the blame in this round: China. The ascendance of the world's most populous country in the global economy not only changed the terms of trade, but it also had a considerable impact on the world's capital markets.

Top Justice officials linked to mortgage banks (June C.)

In recent weeks the Justice Department has come under renewed pressure from members of Congress, state and local officials and homeowners' lawyers to open a wide-ranging criminal investigation of mortgage servicers, the biggest of which have been Covington clients. So far Justice officials haven't responded publicly to any of the requests.

Subculture of Americans prepares for civilization's collapse (Dana T.)

Tegeler, 57, has turned her home in rural Virginia into a "survival center," complete with a large generator, portable heaters, water tanks, and a two-year supply of freeze-dried food that her sister recently gave her as a birthday present. She says that in case of emergency, she could survive indefinitely in her home. And she thinks that emergency could come soon.

Chefs, Butlers, Marble Baths: Hospitals Vie for the Affluent (VeganD)

It’s not just competing on medical grounds and specialties, but competing for customers who can go just about anywhere,” said Helen K. Cohen, a specialist in health facilities at the international architectural firm HOK, which recently designed luxury hospital floors in Singapore and London and renovated NewYork-Presbyterian’s elite offerings in the McKeen Pavilion in Washington Heights. “These kinds of patients, they’re paying cash — they’re the best kind of patient to have,” she added. “Theoretically, it trickles down.”

Bad Year for Wall St. Not Reflected in Chiefs’ Pay (jdargis)

Citigroup is expected to disclose the rest of his pay, cash, be it upfront or deferred, in March. In addition, while not necessarily for work performed in 2011, Mr. Pandit last year was awarded a $16.7 million retention bonus, plus stock options that could add $6.5 million to the package’s overall value.

Why Taxes Aren't As High As They Seem (jdargis)

Many Americans see themselves as struggling under the weight of a heavy tax burden (partly for the understandable reason that wage growth has been so weak). Yet taxes in the United States are quite low today, compared with past years or those in other countries. Most important, American taxes are not sufficient to pay for the programs that many people want, like Medicare, Social Security, road construction and education subsidies.

What does this combination create? An enormous long-term budget deficit.

Energy

Robo-Copter Will Keep Tabs on Navy’s Biofuel Plants (jdargis)

Nevertheless, the Office of Naval Research and the Agriculture Department are wondering whether Maui’s mix of plants, tropical sun, and nutrient-rich soil can produce a bumper crop of clean, renewable energy. Enter the Leptron corporation’s tiny drone helicopter, the Avenger. It’s about to be the Navy’s robotic horticulturist in Hawaii.

European Union Moves Closer to Imposing Tough Sanctions on Iran (jdargis)

French officials say that the effort to increase pressure on Tehran is a crucial element in a “dual track” strategy — inflicting pain through sanctions in order to prompt substantive negotiations to halt Iran’s enrichment of uranium, as the United Nations Security Council has demanded. But even accelerated sanctions are hard to put into effect and slow to work, while Iran is changing the game by moving more of its enrichment centrifuges into deep tunnels inside mountains, where they will be much harder to attack militarily.

$26.67 per gallon?!

Wow!  Regarding the robo-copter/biofuel article, we're paying $26.67 per gallon for bio-fuel!?!?!?

It's getting crazier every day.

A Pill for Preppers.

Do I detect a bias in the report on the Preppers?

The reporter kept looking in the rear view mirror for an explanation for this wierd behaviour. Perhaps Big Pharma can produce a pill to cure them?

The Mayan Calendar predicts doom this December.

Mayan Prediction, my big toe.

The poor duck was clueless.

On the plus side, if something does happen by December, people may just get a clue more quickly, thanks to all the chatter that would cause!
