The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

Tuesday, February 10, 2009, 1:22 PM

Hello everybody.

First a big round of thanks to Davos for tirelessly keeping the content fresh around here while I navigated the Rowe seminar (which was the most amazing experience - more on that soon!), finalizing the edits and production details on the new 3-part DVD, and attended to the dozens of new opportunities that have recently arisen.  A second huge round of thanks to the Brigade and everybody else who has been spreading the word.  Your efforts are yielding huge results.

One gentleman flew in from London for the Rowe seminar after hearing a plug for the Crash Course on Financial Sense Newshour.  Thank you Mike (wink), you know who you are!

Tonight I will be featured on the Springfield MA PBS station WGBY. This is a huge opportunity for us and we hope you'll watch the show if you can.  (more below)

I was contacted by WGBY (Springfield MA) a few months ago, and pre-taped an entirely reworked segment of the Crash Course for their February 10 fundraiser.

While I am excited that this will be broadcast into the homes of over a half million viewers in the WGBY viewing area, this has the ability to become something much bigger as well. All the thousands and thousands of affiliate stations around the country are plugged into a data-base that records the responsiveness of individual fundraisers. If there is a greater than average number of donation calls coming in for this work, other stations will run the fundraiser as well.

And then we have a chance to get this important message into millions of households and perhaps create that tipping point of awareness I have been working tirelessly to create for the past 6 years.

If you have ever wanted to help, but didn't know how, here's your chance. Please call the following number between 8-9 pm (1-800-639-5057) and make a small (or large) donation to PBS. Even if you donate $5, it will increase the NUMBER of calls coming in and increase the chances that the show spreads to all the other affiliate stations.

This is our chance. Please help if you can.

For maximum impact, it might be best to call in during the live pledge breaks.  Let's get those phones ringing off the hook!  My family and friends and neighbors are all pre-activated so I have high hopes.

Here's the tentative schedule (may change):

  • Break 1: 8:12 – 8:16pm
  • Break 2: 8:31 – 8:40pm
  • Break 3: 8:51 – 8:57pm

I'll be there live during the breaks helping to plug the show.

I am filled with gratitude at everyone's efforts and the opportunity to make a difference.

Best,
Chris

Re: The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

Chris,

That's a fantastic update! Congratulations on all the great things you seem to have in the works!!!

I have a suggestion, but first a request: How about a write-up on the "rowe experience" from one of the participants? The rest of us are green with envy and can't wait to hear how your weekend went.

On to the suggestion: I think you should post a little more background info, if possible, for the benefit of those people who are outside of the viewing area but who are inclined to call in to help the cause anyway.  What, specifically should people say when they call? It would be a bit embarassing to have 20 people call in and say "That guy was great!" before your segment airs! :-)

Thanks,

Erik

p.s. I noticed on this week's FSN that Jim has his schedule booked thru the end of March already. A couple of weeks ago he barely had February covered. If you're not on it already, I suggest you follow-up with Jim with regard to his comments on the air about getting you interviewed on an upcoming show.

p.p.s. Be sure to listen to FSN's 3B segment yourself this week. Jim had a bunch of data - particularly number of years before supply exhaustion for a whole bunch of commodities - that I don't think you have yet and it's your kind of stuff. The info actually read on the show was scant but it sounds like there's a new report out about natural resource depletion and it sounds like a good one.

Hello Chris: Most welcome, takes just a second to do. I'm a bookworm/webworm and is a privilege to contribute (cut and paste) what I encounter each day to this fine community.

Thanks/Hat Tips to everyone who emailed me or posted many, many super links/news articles.

Personally: Marsh and I wish you the best success in spreading the Crash Course. We hope you reach a lot of listeners --- for their financial security well being.

Take care

PS I emailed the link WGBY to our local PBS station manager and we will contriute to WGBY as well.

Too Cool!  Dogs and I will be dialing away...

Come on everyone, call in... Dig deep people...  Instead of spending $5 on a Big Mac that you don't need, donate the money to help get out the information that we all really need.

For the next phase, how about we bombard Neil Cavuto and Glenn Beck to get Chris M and Peter Schiff on together?

Talk about critical mass...........

Fantastic news!!

I just want to double-check, there is no way of viewing the show tonight directly off of the WGBY website? If someone can tape it and put it on youtube, that would be great! In any event, I will call in and contribute tonight as well.

I will follow up with what Davos said about emailing his local PBS and do the same with my local PBS station. Maybe we can get the entire Brigade to do the same.

Chris,

I'll be calling in my pledge from Europe so, for this 80%+ American website, if I can do it, so can you...

Thanks everyone!

  1. The times are EST.  Sorry about that oversight, it's one I often make.
  2. The full streaming video of the show will be up on the PBS website tomorrow.  I will provide the link when it becomes available.  There's no way to watch it tonight in a live format as PBS will not be sbe doing that.
  3. PBS shot a bunch of material at the seminar and has agreed to make it available.  I will post it somewhere on the site when I get it edited down.
  4. I promise to get more proactive about getting to Puplava and will certainly listen in on this week's broadcast when I first get a chance.

Chris,

WGBY says you are on for two consecutive hours tonight beginning at 8:00. Did you have later time for us to call in as well?

Re: The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

I've forwarded Chris' post to to all the Crash Course 'grads' in my e mail address book and to my six co-workers who also have watched CC.

We need to get this info into the other forum topics to disseminate as widely as possible.  I'm not going to take unilateral action here, but a lot of folks head right to the comfort of their favorite forums and might miss this even if it is on the home page.

And I don't think it's spam if you do it to yourself Laughing

Re: The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

As I understand it, we are live for the first hour, with a live phone bank staffed by station employees and volunteers, and then they go to a taped loop and the phones are answered by a service of some sort.

So the first hour is the right one to call in on.  I'm not entirely clear on what I am going to be doing there on TeeVee with them besides trying to remember not to accidentally use any of George Carlin's 7 words or looking bored.

But I may be answering called in questions if there's time...

Re: The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

Congratulations, Chris, and everyone else who works so hard to make this happen!  You go!

I really like Davos' and joemanc's suggestions to contact their local PBS station about picking up the WGBY CC show.  I think if the CC was OFFERED to folks on their local PBS stations -so people made their own independent choices to watch it- you might entice a lot more people to check it out.  How exciting!

re Rowe, maybe someone who went could start a thread (if they haven't already?) to share their experiences and observations?  I'm curious too!

Re: The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

Erik,

I will certainly call in.

I will let someone else post a lengthy description of the Rowe conference. It was great to meet Chris, Becca, and Alejando. Their presentations and description of how the CC came in being, as well as how they made major life changes, were inspiring. Perhaps the best part for me was being able to interact with, and get to know to some degree, intelligent, thoughtful, self-reliant but community-oriented people who I would wish I could live near in a community.

Enough from me.

For Erik and others...if someone starts a separate thread feel free to move this...

I walked in Friday night at Rowe, late for dinner as usual, but Chris was the very first person to greet me.  Becca and Alejando added tremendously with the discussions on beliefs and actions.  That they are so open and sharing with their personal growth and change is a generous gift.  The biggest emotion I felt was relief, that I was not the only one who for years felt something was not quite right but couldn't explain it like these folks could.  There was a great deal of energy at the Rowe conference, far different than your typical boring technical symposium.  I had a fairly good handle I thought already on the major issues in the crash course, but now feel much more motivated to take real actions and to spread the word to others.

Now  am a proud member of WGBY; heard a bunch of calls in background. I gave my zip code, 125 mi from Springfield, and almost burst out laughing thinking of them asking our member from Hungary who's calling in.

Yes, feel free to move my Rowe note to a new thread.

Got my pledge in too (first timer to PBS too).  The lady was pretty suprised I was all the way from San Diego.

Told them I was happy they were playing Chris' program. Also can't wait to see it online tomorrow.

Good luck!

Chris - When you post the video recording tomorrow, maybe you can include a simple note for everyone in the U.S. to contact their local public television station and urge them to re-air the show on their local station.

Well folks, I just got done putting my son to bed, and so was late (after 9 PM EST) calling into WGBY.  The good news is, I CAN'T GET THROUGH!!!  The line has been busy for the last 5 minutes straight!!!  I'll keep trying until I do get through.  But I sure hope they have been getting that kind of call-volume since 8 PM!

So, the most awkward part of this was when she asked me "and how do you receive WGBY broadcast?" and I had to answer "mental telepathy until you post the segment"  ;o)

$150 gets me both the original DVD and the 3-DVD set.

Here's to you Chris.

Hello PineCarr:

Too funny, took me 3 calls to get an open line, get done pledging and the volunteer is none other than....Becca!

I think Paul/VanityFox451, if he made the timezone, and the call, was probably considered a local member of WGBY this evening!

Funny, the net, and the financial crises, seem to have no borders.

Take care

Re: The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

I fibbed and said we used to watch when we were stationed in New London, CT.

When the call volunteer asked what I thought about the material I told him it was probably the most important broadcast WGBY has ever made.  His comment?

"Wow, I better listen when I'm not taking pledge calls."

Well played Chris M.  Well played indeed.

Re: The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

nice, Dogs. And nice job, Chris. I think Cavuto or Glenn Beck should be the next maneuver as well. Even if all of us e mailed them for a period of days or weeks, I'm sure someone would eventually break down and at least give this website a good look. We might not have "10%" yet, but 5% working overtime can probably accomplish much the same thing.

Good job, everyone!

Re: The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

Wow!

Thanks everyone!

Becca was manning an overflow phone and she worked the whole time, and met a few of you along the way.  It was fantastic to have the phones ringing the whole time as that added vital energy to the whole scene.

I got to see the call-in sheets between the live takes and recognized more than a few names on there.  Laughing

I am just so pleased to have had the opportunity to do this program and I sincerely hope that PBS finds the material resonant and runs with it on other stations and perhaps in greater depth going forward.

I will have access to some of the Rowe material they shot, probably tomorrow night sometime...I did not get the discs from them on this trip down because they hadn't burned them yet..so it will be a little longer before you get to see some of that video.

Here's to PBS running with the Crash Course!

Thanks again.

Best,
Chris

Re: The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

Thank you, thank you everyone!  It was a trip to be in the studio last night and hear those phones ringing off the hook.  As Chris mentioned, I was on the overflow phone and was kept busy the whole time. I loved seeing the calls come in from all over the country and felt so grateful for your support.

I think the station manager was a little bummed that they weren't getting more local calls, but he should be glad that HIS pick for a fundraiser has national/international support.  I was talking to one of the admin folks at the studio who saw Chris's PBS post on the site and had to alert their call center that international calls might be coming in- she was pretty excited about this.

I think the idea of everyone calling their local PBS affiliate and requesting the show be aired is a great one.  Once the video is loaded onto the WGBY site, you all can send the link.  It would be a great Brigade project as well.

Thanks again to everyone who called.  We're at a turning point here; I can feel it in my bones.

I just spoke to WGBY, they have no plans to put up a streaming video link to the show on their website unfortunately.  I was disappointed that even here in Boston the show wasn't viewable.

Rob,

isn't that crazy? I mean, can't they see how important the information is, or is that the reason why they aren't showing it on stream? Just for the record, over the last 3 days Chris's You Tube video's have jumped by a couple of thousand views - has to say something!

My rant is over...

Thanks for speaking to WGBY,

Paul,

Just want to make sure we're put things in proper perspective... the reason for the "jump" in YouTube views is because we are now using YouTube videos here on the site.   This is discussed by Chris here. We are certainly seeing an increase in overall site visitors, but it's probably not quite as dramatic of a jump as characterized by YouTube views.

Re: The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

I called at 8:51 on the dot and got through without a problem, but I encountered a kind of funny scenario once I was on the line.

I think the woman I was speaking with was elderly and maybe a little bit deaf.  I literally had to shout all of my information to her.  My husband was sitting in the livingroom looking at me funny while watching me shout the call from our kitchen to a PBS station we can't even see.  Of course I could hear a ton of other volunteers taking calls and I could hear the PBS guy talking in the background, so maybe it was just a little bit too loud in the room.  Either way, it was totally worthwhile and I just hope she got all the info down correctly.  I guess she must have had a few other long distance calls before mine, because she didn't even ask how I could possibly be watching the show from where I live.  I hung up laughing.

I'll bet the show was great.  I really hope I get to see it someday.

Re: The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

For what it's worth -

I've been keeping a loose eye on site traffic just by checking the registered users and guests on line data.

Prior to the WGBY broadcast the average at any given time was 40-45 registered users and 370-420 guests.

Yesterday I saw a peak of 72 registered users and somewhere around 600 guests.

Are the site administrators tracking this in any detail and making predictions/plans for site architecture upgrades as more people start showing up?  We have close to 3 million people in our PBS viewing area here in southeastern Virginia - northeastern Carolina and would probably get a lot more people on the site if we can get our PBS station to air the show.

Re: The Crash Course on PBS Station tonight

Hi Ron,

thankyou for clearing that up for me, there are so many interesting threads here to play in!!

Can I offer a suggestion?

'wonderingmind42' is the site I ripped 'The most IMPORTANT Video You'll Ever See'  for one of my threads here:-

http://www.peakprosperity.com/forum/most-important-video-youll-ever-see/12935

Greg, who put the site together amounting to 77 videos in total, gained incredible viewing figures with his 'hands on' aproach to the comments strip. As an example, check out the viewing figures on this one of his :-

Yes, you've read that right, 1.8 million!! Greg now has a book ready for publication in June of this year.

Is there a chance that a certain amount of time could be used in answering points made there to aid the account in a similar fashion?

Take Care,

Paul

In a word, yes.  Smile

Actually we're in a good place.  We can have a very significant increase in number of visitors without much change in the site architecture.  There's always fine tuning we can do in terms of performance, but we will be able to handle a lot more users than we have right now.

Good numbers Dogs.

But, to add to your analysis...  I picked up on the LinkedIn opportunity a couple of days ago, so, you'l never know if the site traffic was attributable to WGBY, or to the 150+ 'connections' I sent a message to.

Just noise in the system?  How will you ever know?

;o)   (just kidding, of course, but who cares either way?)

Cheers,

Mark
