I've installed many rain collection systems, and always used UV to treat bacteria. A local water treatment guy says that ozone is far superior cause it kills while UV sterilizes. Any opinions?
Water Storage & Treatment

I see from you photo that you ride. Do you have your horses at home and how are you planning for them?
I have 2 drafts with my own pastures and a year hay supply. i have a back up generator for water. In the summer, I have a small pond and rainwater off my roof (Ok over shingles?). I live in CT and will have a long term problem with water without electicity/propane for generator. Grains seem to go moldy in the summer. I keep a good supply of the supplements I use all the time. Harness repair could be a problem.
I would like to talk to other large animal owners. Reva
Now how do I send this?
Hi Reva,
I guess the short answer is that if things get really bad we will not be able to care for our livestock. We have 76 acres, and hopefully they can graize and survive, but we currently buy a lot of supplimental hay.
I guess I live in a dual world, on the one hand preparing for what seems to be inevitable, but on the other hand trying to enjoy life as I have known it.
Water is a key element, and we are trying to catch as much water as we can on our property. We have 36,000 gallons of rain storage in plastic tanks, and also two ponds that fill during rains and go dry during dry spells.
I am building a larger hay barn which will also be more rain water collection surface. We should have about 2 year hay reserves when that is complete.
I heard about ozone treatment for the first time in an interview Dr. Mercola did with the head of the Hippocrates Health Institute. I don't remember if they went into more detail than treating the pools with ozone, but if you download the transcript you can search for "ozone" and see what they covered. The interview is full of good material by the way...
Thanks RPwannabe....Good info.
