Excited to join this group, Don.
Not experienced enough yet to split a hive, so I don't have any practical advice for you.
I put up my first hive in April here in Silicon Valley, CA. From my beginner's perspective, it's doing really well. The 2 brood supers are full (I mean *really* full - each frame is heavy with beautiful white-capped honeycomb).
Progress has slowed since I put on the honey super with queen excluder, but after a few slow weeks, I'm beginning to see traction in drawing out the comb. Hoping a nectar flow comes soon, as I'd love to have my first honey harvest before the end of July!
