That would mark the highest Japanese rate since 1995. The BOJ is also considering pausing its bond purchase reduction program from April 2027. The 10-year JGB yield has risen above the Topix dividend yield for the first time since the 2008 financial crisis. In the real economy, the Department of Transportation reported that US airlines’ fuel costs rose 78 percent in April amid the Iran conflict, totaling $6.5 billion, coinciding with a 20.7 percent year-over-year increase in airline fares in the April CPI. Globally, airlines face an estimated $100 billion in additional fuel costs for 2026 tied to the conflict.
Additionally, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby stated that roughly 900 aircraft sit grounded worldwide because carriers cannot secure engines or parts, and the shortage will persist for many years. Epiq AACER’s Michael Hunter cited elevated interest rates, persistent inflation, and higher operating costs. Inflation rose from 2.4 percent in February to 3.8 percent in April, while the Fed’s benchmark rate stood at 3.5 to 3.75 percent. Commercial Chapter 11 filings fell 7 percent in May. The Nasdaq fell 4.7 percent, the SOX semiconductor index dropped 10 percent, and memory stocks fell 11 percent. OpenAI is preparing changes to ChatGPT ahead of a planned IPO targeting valuations between $730 billion and $1 trillion. One senior employee told the Financial Times that the current chat interface is being replaced. With ChatGPT operating at a loss, the company is redesigning the interface to direct users toward Codex, image tools, AI agents, and partner apps. New information in the murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, stabbed by Vickrum Digwa in Southampton, has highlighted multiple reported police failures. On the night of the killing, his family told emergency services there were no knives involved.
