Not just the reactor at Doel 3, but all seven nuclear power plants in Belgium are in danger, according to Eric van Walle of the centre for nuclear energy in Mol. "And more so: in all reactors of this generation - worldwide - defects can occur." The problems with the reactor vessel in Doel are due to a construction error that could be due to the producer but also due to the used steel or the production process that was used.
The reactor vessel of Doel 3 is probably not the only one that wasn't produced as it should have been during the 1970s by the Dutch company Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij. Worldwide 22 reactor vessels, made by the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij about 40 years ago, are in use. Half of these are in America. For all of these the same scenario as in Doel 3 seems likely.
