Life Insurance - What's the point?

Anyone else out there starting to feel a bit silly about paying $$$ each year for term life insurance?  When the economic SHTF, what good will it do?  What useful purpose does it still serve? And doesn't this just fuel the finance/banking/corruption collective?

Realistic Gun Security

I've seen some videos about the reality of gun battles in SHTF scenarios, war-like scenarios, etc. Some people saying a handgun is no good because you could easily get picked off from 100 yards, etc.

To me this seems unrealistic. We aren't talking about a warzone where enemies are well-defined and easily identified. We are talking about neighborhoods where people are starving, people coming to your home looking for food, and most of this happening in cities or the suburbs. Most of us won't have 100 yards line of site in ANY direction.

Sandy: As bad as Katria's aftermath?

I just read a disturbing report from GLenn Beck's relief organization (yes he has one). Mercury One sent in Hurricane Sandy relief supplies via truck and via existing relief organizations to some of the victims of Sandy in Coney Island. Distrubution channels were to be through local churches. Here's part of what they reported.

Five most important things to do before the SHTF?

Hi All,

First of all, I'd like to thank the community here: following an earlier forum discussion with several of you, I pulled all of my pension funds (despite the 35% income tax) and converted them to gold. And not a moment too soon, as it is increasingly clear that pension funds here (I am not an American) are a sort of pyramid scheme that is quickly collapsing.

Dealing with thieves

In a SHTF scenario, honest, good people would starve.  What should you do about protecting your supplies for your family?  Some people may resort to stealing.  What if you had a visible garden?

"You can't eat Gold"

We've probably all heard this tired old cliche - you can't eat Gold.

There are a significant number of opinions out there that cast Gold as both a useless waste of money, and an invaluable method of asset protection. There are anecdotes about trading in metals in SHTF, and there are situations where it's simply made a person a target during periods of lawlessness.

The Coming Cultural Shift

Hey all --

Below is a link to a fine piece (IMO) from alt-market.com -- it discusses 7 things that indicate a culture in decline or the throes of painful change.   The US shows signs of all seven.  The OWS movement is I believe a reaction to these symptoms of decline.  So, for that matter, was the original Tea Party movement.  A number of these issues get discussed here at CM.com.

question about border crossings/policies when SHTF

I realize that collapse scenarios are not always pandemonius or marked by a clear signal that things are definitely not business as usual- but presuming that it is,  does anyone have any knowledgeable insight on what is expected at border crossings and ports/airports, particularly US/Canadian and US/Mexico borders?  Any historical precedents worthy of comparison?  I live in Windsor, right across the river from Detroit.

question about SHTF scenario in Eastern Europe

My wife is from Romania.  We had an interesting discussion last night, where she pointed out some things which now convince me that they are amongst the most "collapse ready" societies in the world:  most Romanians carry no debt, keep most of their savings in cash hidden in their homes, don't use plastic, don't use cheques, are very very self sufficient.  Extremely agrarian, everyone has small gardens or at least knows many people who do.  Recently experienced all forms of SHTF, hyperinflation, dictatorship, banks collapsing/taking off with the money.  While this ha
